Spike aerators work as well aerate the lawn?

Wednesday, June 30, 2010 0 comments

One might wonder if Spike Aerator really work, as compared to Spike Aerator lawn aerators, and what is the best to work for my lawn?

The truth is that there are five different types of spike lawn aerators. Some of them have little or no positive effects on your lawn. Some help a ton. In this article we describe them in order of effectiveness.

1) mower wheel studs are the least effective. Concerns only a tiny 2 inches to goand the thorns are so small, it is doubtful that go deep enough to do something good. Do not buy this!

2) Spiked Aerator Shoes These are a bit 'better, but still tips are narrow and small to make a lot of good. The range is only slightly better than the wheel mower has the advantage of being affordable and only between 10 and $ 30.

3) Press spike aerator. This roll on the ground and provide better service. They are easier to use, but unless you have a lot of extra weight on them, they can not penetrate very deeply.

4) Hand and foot pressure peaks. These go deep enough to have a positive effect. They are durable, affordable and you will get excellent results. The only drawback is that it should be classified as long and tiring.

5) The rotating drum aerator tip. These aerators have a solid core of metal, which can be filled with water orSand so that a better market penetration. They are heavy enough to penetrate the surface and deep enough to make a difference. They are easier to use, then press the foot air vent and get a better offer. I like numbers 4 and 5 are the best for Spike aerators. You decide what is best for you!

As we started to sign messages reflecting home

Tuesday, June 29, 2010 0 comments

Back in 1995 I moved home with my family in a lovely sleepy village on the coast of Sussex, where most houses had no house numbers - just house names. Our house was called simply 'The Warren'. I used my sign making skills we sign a brand new wooden house name for our new home. I jumped out of the house name in 3.5 "letter striped V 'and gave them a gold leaf finish - very elegant, I thought. The sign was illuminated by a light automatic safety on foot, when someonefor unity.

One dark December evening, we had an urgent call from our local medical care for our young son, who was a chest pain and breathing problems - the doctor said he was with us in about five minutes - 20 minutes, came the doctor during the examination of our son and complained bitterly that try a lot of precious time wasted our Home Search. - According to the doctor could not see our name in the dark house and had to driveand way down, pointing his flashlight to find the names right house for 15 minutes! The good doctor also complained about the fact that this is a common problem for him during the hours of darkness. He recalled that even homes with house numbers can be difficult to see from a car at night, let alone properties like ours, with only a house name. He also stressed that each of 999 Emergency response services also have the same problem finding homes in the dark and that the consequences of theirFind my address in a hurry during the night could be much worse.

When you leave the doctor suggested I make my name visible house, if I need another doctor. - So much for the elegant wood panel with gold leaf, I just did - could not be seen from the street at night and, as security lights light when you walk the path could not be seen by a machine .

That is, when my wife, Julie had the idea genial home reflection of a sign for our home - especially inCase, the doctor had to back or in the event of other emergencies are called.

I just him and gave us a wooden sign with white reflective lettering of the same material we used to make road signs in the workplace. - It was not long before my neighbors noticed the house on behalf brilliant night and asked me to make reflective signs for their homes. I soon realized the potential for decorative, reflective house number, house name signs for businesses and createtrading "ornamental signs." Initially I tried the house brand of cold calling door to door in a city I marketed with boards to get a good idea of what type of house sign designs, shapes and sizes would be popular with homeowners.

We then started to fairs to sell our reflective house signs through crafts, local garden centers and hardware stores. In 1999 we began offering our reflective house signs direct to customers via this site - online orders grew so muchwe set the retail sales and craft fairs in 2001. Now we only offer our reflective house signs direct to customers through our site

Originally, we had the house signs made of hardwood, but I soon discovered that the wooden house signs are repainted every two three years ago to keep this deterioration need - so I have a more lasting alternative that requires no maintenance. After the test, ceramics, cast iron, aluminum, plastic and reconstitutedI chose reconstituted slate slate for its excellent quality of hand cast, outdoor life and property inert, which allows us to decorate the house with modern permanent color plates.

With high quality, we reconstituted slate house signs that seem like molten iron, but never rust - they can produce hand painted with details like ceramic, but are completely resistant. We can spray paint with a variety of colored backgrounds, customersChoice, and willingly accept the laminating process heat is used to adhere permanently reflective text and numbers with no degradation or distortion.

We prefer the facts of our seven stage to keep the production process and materials that we use to argue that competitors can to maintain our quality process that we can offer our unique 7-year warranty on all world will be copied.

I think I should be grateful that they checked off under a doctor in 1995 - wenow the number one producer in the UK to measure reflective signs will employ specialist sign makers home and house sign artists that allow us to offer a wide range of quality, decorative house signs that are more easily visible to offer overnight .

After the trade for 10 years as one company that took over the company Yoursigns Ltd in 2005 with me as manager. We have moved our operations to a bigger house sign studio in Newport, Isle of Wight. - The Companyand expanded in January 2007 we moved into our house to prepare Register to Ash, near Canterbury, Kent. In February 2008 we moved to our house studies of access to even larger premises in Sandown, Isle of Wight, where I currently do all our characters.

Electric Bug Killer

Monday, June 28, 2010 0 comments

Are you looking to rid your home or yard of those pesky flying bugs? Want to start enjoying the great outdoors? You need an electric bug killer.

The electric bug killer is safe for the environment. No more worrying about having to use those aerosol bug sprays and actually hitting the bug. Toss out that nasty old fly swatter. The electric bug killer attracts the bugs so you don't have to chase after them. Just let the bugs find the zapper.

The hand held models look a lot like a little tennis racket. Just wave at the flying insect with the racket and bugs are zapped instantly. They are great to take on vacation or family outings where you suspect bugs may be a problem. Since they do have a low power output, there is no need to worry about harming children or pets. Light weight and portable, just toss the hand held model in the trunk and go. These hand held models are also great to have in your kitchen where you want to avoid contamination of food or perhaps in a children's room.

The plug-in type electric bug killer comes in 15 watt for half acre protection up to as high as 80 watts for commercial and/or industrial locations.

The rechargeable type is designed to hang directly in a tree in your back yard or place it on your patio table. They come equipped with UV light and fan to attract the insect. They can run up to six hours on a single charge.

There is a 12 volt bug zapper that you plug into your car's cigarette lighter outlet, and zap in and around your vehicle.

Prices vary, with hand-held models as low as $10 and the plug-ins from $30 up to $270. They are great money savers, since you purchase once and your done. No more wasting money buying cans of bug spray or fly traps.

Warranties vary depending on the manufacturer. You can also purchase extended warranties on some models.

Warm weather is coming and so are the bugs. Plug in your bug killer and enjoy the outdoors.

Cheap Earthway 6500 Earthway Tubular Steel High Wheel Cultivator 6500

Saturday, June 26, 2010 0 comments

We brought an Earthway high wheel garden cultivator to a family member in Ireland who has a large organic vegetable garden. It works amazingly well. We have only used the five-prong cultivator to weed between the crop rows in pretty heavy clay soil, and have yet to try the other attachments. It requires only the technique of using a manual push mower: one step forward at a time; a shallow pass the first time and a deeper pass the second; going down the grade rather than up it; and so on. We are so impressed with it that we've just ordered one for our home garden and allotment in California. It makes weeding a pleasure and saves our backs.

September 2, 2007 follow-up. We did not have such good luck with our second cultivator. It arrived packaged in the original Earthway box, but it was missing two vital parts and the parts that were sent were painted black, not the usual powdered steel finish. We called Earthway, which promptly sent the two parts and had no explanation why the hoe was now painted black. I asked them to make sure that the missing parts were black as well. The two parts arrived painted gray, so we have a 2-tone hoe. Additionally, the main tool, the 5-clawed cultivator, had too much solder on one of its two parts, so they did not fit together smoothly, with the result that our hoe is somewhat lopsided when it is standing up. It still works well, but its appearance and lopsidedness take away some of the pleasure of using it. We emailed Earthway about it, but never received a response.

Work-saving tool has greater operating stability than its imitators. Three tools included: Twin End Furrow Plow channels seed rows; Mold Board Plow works as plow and tiller; and the 5 Tine Cultivator handles weeding and soil loosening. U.S.A.

Customer Reviews

UPS shipping is great! Product is good. - G. Joseph - Kentucky mountains
The product is good if you have a tiller. I would have preferred a high wheel cultivator with the oak handle but there was a long wait for shipping this product.
I was told to allow 7-10 days for shipping but I received the product by UPS in 2 days. That's what brown did for me.

good idea cheapened - F. W. Adams - Murfreesboro, Tn.
When mywooden handled cultivator was stolen I replaced it with this tubular steel model. The tubing is not nearly rigid enough for use in heavy soils.Go for a model with oak or ash handles. The optional slicing hoe does a great job.

High wheel Cultivator - Dan Curtis - Philadelphia, TN USA
The high wheel cultivator is one the easiest ways to cultivate weeds right up against the crop. I like using it more than a hoe. I lay off rows with the single point plow, and it will cover rows as well. I sure do like mine and I use it alot.

5 Ways We're Treating Children Like Adults

People say they want kids to be kids. But our actions speak louder than words.

Here are 5 ways children are being pushed to behave like little adults way too early in their lives:

(1) Stuck inside: Remember when our parents would tell us to go outside and play? Many children are playing inside these days out of fear, laziness, or caretaker excuses (i.e. too busy, otherwise occupied, too messy, not equipped). But kids need to play outside for healthy development. They also need it in order to get in touch with nature if we want them to care about it, they need to interact with it!

(2) Going to the gym: The news has recently shown a new trend emerging. Children are "pumping iron" instead of participating in more "kid-friendly" activities like martial arts, gymnastics, and ballet! In fact, last year, 1.3 million children between the ages of 6 to 11 were members of a health club (IHRSA). What ever happened to monkey bars, bike riding, and swimming? Shouldn't we feel concerned that by the time these children feel they "have to" go to the gym (as adults), they'll be bored of doing it!

(3) Medicated: The AAP has now started recommending statins, traditionally and adult medication, for children as young as 8 years old in order to lower cholesterol. Experts tell us that this can be very dangerous. In addition, we're setting up children to be on these medications for life. It's another quick pill-pooping solution in a fast-paced world.

(4) Waxed: This will likely infuriate you or at least cause you to shake your head. Parents are taking their children to get "waxed" just like Mommy. Some of the children are as young as 6 years old. Salons are removing what they call "virgin hair" from their legs, arm pits, or other areas. The trend is becoming more and more common. In fact, the International Spa Association says that over half of the 14,000 spas in the U.S. offer packages for families, teens or children.

(5) Overfed: They might call them kid's meals but they are anything but. Studies are showing that the majority of kids menus st fast food restaurant chains are too high in calories, fat, and sodium for children. Some meals can pack over 70% of a child's daily calories into one meal!

So are we really allowing kids to be kids? You be the judge. Seems to me that we're heading in the wrong direction and fast.

Self Sufficient Living

Thursday, June 24, 2010 0 comments

Many of us would love to become more self sufficient. The reality is that for some, it never gets past the dreaming stage. If you really do wish to become more self sufficient then the time to start is now.

Ask yourself what you can do to start being less dependent on the nine to five and to be able to gradually move away from having to buy everything that makes your world run.

Self Sufficient living relies heavily on cutting back on anything that is an unnecessary expense. If you want to gradually cut the hours you work for other people and live more from what you can produce then you need to make a start.

There are a few things you can do immediately to cut your spending and start down the road to having more time to devote to having a more self sufficient lifestyle.

Stop using so much Electricity. Turn everything off when not in use.

Stop using so much water. Never leave taps running, use a composting toilet, recycle when possible. Just ensure you cut your water bills dramatically.

Keep Chickens. Birds are cheap to keep, don't need much room and will save a lot of money on the purchase of eggs.

Most importantly, grow your own vegetables. Why pay for food when you can get it for free?

Growing Vegetables can save you an absolute fortune. Use the back yard, a friends piece of land or an allotment. However you do it make sure you do. Hunt around until you can find some land to use if you don't have your own and start growing. You will be amazed how much you can grow in a small space.

Growing your own food is one of the best ways to save a vast amount of money and begin down the path of self reliance.

California King Size

Wednesday, June 23, 2010 0 comments

Tall people get sick and tired of having their feet hang off the bottom of the bed at night. The California king-size bed offers a great solution to this annoying problem. With the same width of a king-size bed, the California king size bed is 4 inches longer. Sleeping in comfort is essential to a healthy lifestyle. Without good sleep, one is unable to live life to their fullest capacity. California king size beds aid in those that have problems with the regular king size beds.

Shopping for a California king size comforter is usually slightly more difficult than shopping for a queen or regular king size bed. They are out there though. Offered by the best of designers, comforter sets made for California king size beds come with the same quality you are looking for. When shopping for California king side bedding, the best place to start your search is online. While online does not offer you the chance to see the product up front, if you purchase from a reputable online website you are usually safe on getting what quality you want. First you need to consider what you are looking for. You need to set yourself a budget and stick to it. You also want to look in your bedroom and really look at what will enhance the design of the room.

If you want a bedroom with some fashion, you need to make sure that you do some looking around first. Go online and print out the picture of a few that you like and take them into your bedroom. This will often help with making sure that you get what you want. It is sometimes hard to return items, so you want to make sure that you are getting exactly what you want the first time. Comforter sets are really the way to go if you are looking for that just out of the magazine look. They offer everything from the comforter, sheets, pillow cases, and most of the time they come with the skirting. Unless you want to spend more time and money shopping for things that will match your comforter, comforter sets are your best option.

In summary, if you are sick and tired of having your feet hang off the end of the bed at night, try a California king-size bed. They are guaranteed to help you get the rest that you need to do what you need to do.

History and Party Trivia of Stuffed Animals

The concept of stuffed animals are reflected in tomb paintings that date back a really long time to Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia civilizations. Based upon the paintings as they have been discovered and translated, it would appear that stuffed animals had a purpose in religious ceremony and ritual as well as being used for the purpose of human play. Medieval Europe used stuffed animals in mystery plays to represent animals seen in the Bible stories. Stuffed animals were used to represent characters like the serpent in the Garden of Eden or lions in the story of Daniel in the lions' den. These animal roles were a pivotal part of the story that could not be ignored, but could not acted out by a human actor either. Therefore, the stuffed animals worked much better to fill the part.

Toys became a booming industry during the Industrial Revolution in Europe. Soft toys became increasingly popular among the population with the Steiff Corporation of Germany quickly becoming the industry leader. However, all stuffed animals are not always made by mechanized industry and a great deal of samples of stuffed animals have been found made in a more homemade genre with stuffings full of stray, cotton, batting, rags, and even beans. Some stuffed animals have even been found to have been made from stuffing the skins of hunted animals, but it is unclear whether these were animals that were made for use as a toy, or if they were utilized to become display items which would be more of a taxidermy utilization, not necessarily a toy.

Among the most popular stuffed animals, the teddy bear and the sock monkey almost always rank high toward the top of the list. Both have been in production since the early 1900s, while there is evidence that sock monkeys may have been popular much earlier, although not in formal production. Today, soft toys and stuffed animals remain popular. In recent years the Ty Company brought back a renaissance of sorts to the stuffed animal market with their Beanie Baby line. Animal lovers, children and collectors from countries all over the world bought up as many stuffed animals as Ty Company could produce including stuffed versions of lizards, dinosaurs, unicorns, and goldfish along with the standard animal patterns of bears, cats, dogs, bunnies, etc. Today, literally hundreds if not thousands, of companies produce stuffed animals for sale worldwide.

Happy Birthday to You-It's Party Time!

A birthday party doesn't have to be a boring affair that everyone dreads coming to. Jazz it up with a theme and something memorable for all of the guests. If you want to stick with Happy Birthday as your theme, make it a famous one.

Find pictures of famous people celebrating birthdays - A movie star blowing out candles or a musician throwing their own party. Make them into posters and hang around the room or house hosting the party. Make it a game and have the guests guess who each actor and star is. Another fun game would be to find all of the TV and song clips of stars singing and make it a guessing game. Without showing who is singing, have people guess. Some famous renditions include Shirley Temple and Marilyn Monroe.

To decorate for a birthday party you need balloons and streamers. A party supply store will have every color imaginable to match your theme. Paper products like cups, napkins, silverware and tablecloths are also available for purchase to match. If you need assistance, any party planner would be glad to help.

Birthday parties can serve a meal or snacks. If you are having a small party, dinner can be planned. If it is a large party, finger foods or appetizers are cheaper and easier to provide for everyone. They make less of a mess too!

Birthday parties also require a cake! Hire a cake baker or create one yourself using pans from the party supply store. They come in large and small and have pattern books if you are looking for ideas. Candles, frosting and other cake decorations are also available.

Remember to take pictures of all your guests to include in a thank you card. Whether it is a party where they bring gifts or not, send them a note thanking them for sharing in your big day.

How to Care For Your Tarps

Caring for your tarpaulins properly will extend their useful lives significantly and save you time and money. The proper care of a poly blue tarp is basically the same for a vinyl heavy duty one. In both cases, you will want to secure them properly, store them when they are not being used, and keep them clean. Canvas tarpaulins require the same care and can even be retreated to maintain their effectiveness.

Tie Me Down

The number one protection you can give tarps of all kinds is to properly secure them when in use. They are not meant for gale force winds or hurricanes. To be effective and long lasting, blue tarps, white tarps, and other heavy duty tarps must be securely fastened to a stable structure. Flapping erratically in powerful wind will destroy even the best made product. In windy areas, it's a good idea to allow the air a path of least resistance to minimize the wear and tear on your tarps.

Treat Me Right

When you are not using your tarp, you can greatly extend its useful life by cleaning it properly. Both poly and vinyl tarpaulins can be cleaned simply with soapy water and a sponge. Canvas can also be cleaned with soapy water or detergents specifically designed to clean them. Canvas should never be placed in your washing machine or dryer as the waxes and dyes used can stain your machine. You can retreat your canvas with Canvac or similar chemicals to refresh their water and mold resistant qualities.

Stow Me Below Decks

When your tarp is not in use, it should be stored out of the sun and rain to help protect the integrity of the material. Leaving even a heavy duty tarp outside on a job site or in your yard will expose it needlessly to the elements, reducing its effective life span. In addition, being blown around and rubbing against abrasive materials or sharp edges and corners can damage the tarpaulin, causing it to require replacement much faster.

The material will determine how much rough treatment it can withstand. A lightweight blue tarp is the most fragile and inexpensive. They are not designed for use on sharp or rough edges such as wood piles, concrete, or in shipping. White tarps, on the other hand, are more durable and can withstand rougher conditions. A heavy duty tarp made from vinyl is thicker and more durable than poly tarps.

You can protect your tarpaulins by keeping them clean, tying them down properly, and putting them away when not in use. Cheap or expensive, all tarps will last far longer and perform better if they are kept clean and put away when not in use. Tying them down properly will also ensure their longevity and effectiveness.

My First Brainbox - Kids

I had a moment of realisation the other day walking through the market because I found the book that I'd had as a little girl, yes that one which I can still recite by heart because it was read to me so many times.

Looking at it as a mother I can see all the things that appealed, the bright colours, the funny pictures with lots of smiles and looking at the cards in my first brainbox I see the same things.

The colours are bright and eye catching and everyone's smiling. When I showed them to my little boy I had to prise them away from him at bedtime! I'm sure he didn't realise he was actually learning things from the game.

My first Brainbox children's toy consists of a set of 71 cards. Each player picks a card and has ten seconds to memorise the image on the front.

They then have to roll a dice to pick which question on the back they have to answer. If they get it right they keep the card, get it wrong and it'll be prised away by the other player. {Expect to hear shouting at this point!}

If both players get the question right or wrong then it's through to sudden death...the person with the most cards at the end of the game is declared brain box supreme!

The beauty of Brainbox toy is its portability, there aren't loads of fiddly little bits to get lost or break.

It also grows as your children grow with more complicated and specialised boxes available in the range.

My first Brainbox children's toy is simple to play and won't loose their attention like games aimed at older children and if they're anything like my little boy then expect to be telling them to put it away.

Happy Birthday

Happy Birthday!
Every year at this time my husband and I go broke. Our financial demise begins on April 24th and runs until May 15th.

You see, it's "Birthday Season" around here. Beginning with our son, Adam and ending with my dad.

When we were first married we immediately made a "no gifts" rule with all members. The arrangement was: cards, calls and to try and congregate for dinner. Have any idea how much that alone can cost? I'm sure you all can identify. We said when we have kids, that's who should get gifts. Period. Otherwise, we feared we'd never have a home of our own-except one with the accompanying address of Tent City, USA.

But I digress. As of now, in the three weeks I've mentioned we have 7 birthdays and Mother's Day. If you want to add a couple of weeks-include 2 anniversaries as well.

So here we are again. I love to celebrate my kids birthdays. They have them one week apart. I split it down the middle and have a family/friend party on the weekend in between. Nothing fancy, but fun none the less. At least for some of us....

This year, my wonderful husband pointed out that our "baby" is 23 and our first born is going to be 25 and was now a mother herself. He put his foot down. We'll still give them (and our son-in-law, who follows the week after) cards with birthday money enclosed-but no more dinners for 15-20 people.

"After all, they aren't kids anymore!" Well, not chronologically, but they are STILL my babies!
Anyway, we discussed it further and agreed.

We will sing Happy Birthday to our son and daughter with the ever growing clan. The rest of the birthday kids: my sister-in-law (lives up north, card and call is the only way), one of our brothers-in-law, our nephew (ka-ching), our son-in-law (ka-ching) and then my dad, who will be 78 this year.

These we will do during our Mother's Day BBQ. You see the last three are consecutive and one of them is always on Mom's day. This year, our daughter joins that club along with my mom, mother-in-law, sister and me. Do you think that any of the men will take care of any of this for us?

When I mention our "month of happiness and financial doom" to people, most reply with stories of their own "birthdaymania" times.

It seems age really is all relative.

Family Bonds Nurture Community Spirit

The family is the smallest unit in a community. It is also the child's first school for learning values like sharing, caring and compassion. The family provides a secure setting where citizens of the future are molded to become responsible members of the community. This makes the family an important unit of the community, a place where the child learns human values and feels rooted.

The community spirit that is so important to keeping societies together is taught in the family. Families are increasingly becoming small, nuclear units. Migrations and other factors have led to the break up of the extended family system that once held together traditional communities. There was a time when an entire village or locality in a town would be inhabited by members of the same family, and everybody was everybody else's cousin, aunt, brother, uncle or grandparent.

Migrations and economic realities have increased the physical distance between members of the extended family, and resulted in the fragmentation of close knit communities that were once the backbone of any society. Young people feel increasingly alienated in a setup without community bonding. Their parents may not be able to spend quality time with them, or help them through various problems of growing up, and the community may not extend the help needed.

Families are the crucial element of a community. An extended family is a precursor to the larger social unit, society. Being part of an extended family teaches young people the importance of sharing and giving. It helps them adapt better to the world at large. If the family has some trouble, then all members of the extended family chip in to help. Most importantly, the extended family absorbs shocks of death, divorce, illness, unemployment and other rampant problems facing families, giving children a safe, secure environment to grow in. This leads children to become better citizens who are able to fit in well in society and make important contributions to the community.

How to Start a New Vegetable Garden

Warm spring weather seems to get people excited about planting their gardens each year. Despite the fact that many vegetables can and should be started inside as much as six weeks before planting time. Just the fun of planting the seeds and working in the earth can be very rewarding. Vegetable gardens are a fantastic place to teach children how flowers and vegetables are grown and seeing their expressions when they harvest some pole beans or dig up some new potatoes or carrots is a delight in itself.

Gardens can be a simple as a single five gallon pail on a balcony or a huge fifty by a hundred foot major garden plot. In the Northern parts of the country planning your garden while there are still lots of snow on the ground is a fun way to pass time with the kids. If you already have seed packets in hand, you can lay them out a table and have the kids identify each one. Read the planting instructions on a few packets so they get the general idea of what has to be done with each one. Using the spacing shown on the packages of seeds, layout a general idea of where and how many different things you wish to plant. Some are planted six inches apart with rows two feet apart, some are planted in hills and some in flat areas. Each year we try and plant a few new things not only to see how they grow but to maybe find something new we may like to eat. This year it is Brussels sprouts and sugar plants.

Over the years we have fenced off an area approximately twenty-five feet by seventy feet for our garden. I used four foot high heavy rolled wore and steel fence posts. These seem to take abuse the best and last a good long time. We have opted for mowed grass rows between the beds because it not only looks very nice but it is easier to maintain. Mulch coverings for rows need constant upkeep and weeding. Mowing with a bagger leaves a clipping free area that is easy to sit and walk on while working the garden. I use the clippings along the fences to keep the grass down and this way I do not need to trim or weed whack the fence line to keep it neat looking. I first turned the eight beds over using a rented rear tine roto-tiller. Once the sod was broken and turned under, a turning with a garden spade each spring is all that is necessary. Unless you have a massive garden, buying a roto-tiller is not economical. It would be cheaper to go buy the veggies. We mulch our beds with either grass clippings once the plants are well established or use old black and white newspapers. Do not use papers with color in them. Once the newspapers get wet a few times, they will mat down and stay in place. Even better, they're free. A great way to recycle them.

This year we have so far planted carrots, kale, leaf lettuce, radishes, zucchini, melons, 3 types of tomatoes, Brussels sprouts, strawberries (second year), lavender, sunflowers, sugar plants (new) and bush beans. Potatoes will be done this weekend. Last year the kids helped plant the pieces of potatoes we saved from a bag of potatoes that had gone to root. The bushes came up very quickly and were large and lush green in color. After a few weeks the flowers appeared. After I watched the flowers die off I told my then thirty year old daughter the potatoes were ready and to have the grandchildren pick them. She gathered her three kids up and they all headed for the garden. A few minutes later they returned to the house quite dejected to announce that there were no potatoes there. I headed back out to the garden with them as I could not believe none of those gorgeous bushes had grown any potatoes. Arriving at the potato patch, I saw immediately that there was no dirt turned over and all the plants were still quite intact. I realized then that my daughter had no idea the potatoes were underground and not actually grown on the part above ground. As I pulled the bush out and despite their very vocal protests that I was going to kill it, as soon as the kids saw the potatoes pop up, they were amazed. Including the thirty year old who said she just never knew. It gave everyone a good laugh and she still gets teased a little about it.

Do not try and create a huge garden your first year. The work involved can be daunting and if you take on too much in the beginning you will lose interest and the garden will die. Once you learn how many hours it takes to keep your veggies weed free and how long it takes to water them, you can better judge how much larger an area you can handle.

Increasing your garden size a little each year is challenging but the bounty is well worth the work. If you are a strawberry fan you are probably aware of how expensive they are at market. Last year we planted 15 plants in a raised bed and did get to harvest a few for our breakfast cereal. Last fall over all my helper's protests, I showed them how to mow the plants down with the lawn mower and cover them with some loose straw. This spring when the bed was uncovered, the plants were quite healthy and had generated another twenty baby plants. We moved the babies into longer rows and now our strawberry bed is more than twice as big as last year. Last years plants need to be picked every single day and the now mature babies about every other day. There are more than enough strawberries for the grand children's breakfast cereals and some great strawberry shortcakes as well. These types of fruit and vegetables that come back year after year save a great deal of work and can save a good amount on the grocery bill as well.

Rhubarb is another garden staple that is easy to maintain and provides a constant supply of new cuttings all summer long. I planted some in a flower garden and now years later they have become a staple in that garden. Self regenerating all summer long and well into the fall season, rhubarb needs only lots of water and good soil to provide a good steady crop to harvest. Cutting the stems right to the crown of the plant, I leave behind only a few small stems and leaves and within a couple of weeks the small ones are large and ready to harvest. Used with your strawberries for a strawberry--rhubarb pie with a sugar crust is a thing of delight. The pie never lasts long in our house. If you have some extra room try planting a few ever bearing blueberry bushes. They too do not have to be in a formal garden. Flower gardens or just a spare corner of a sunny yard is just fine. Just wait until you taste your own fresh picked blueberries in a pie. There is nothing in the stores like it.

For some reason the fruits and veggies taste better when they are fresh picked and of course it has to do with technical stuff like the vitamins stay better because they are fresh and so on. They just plain taste better. Watering the garden is another item of work that needs to be discussed. Once your garden is well established, beds laid out and so on, you may want to install some more permanent piping to bring water to the beds. For now in the beginning, stick with a garden hose and watering can. When you water, place the water at the base of the plant. Give each plant a good long drink and let the water seep into the soil. If you have created dishes around each plant, that helps keep the water where you want it at the plant itself. Do not wet the entire planting bed by spraying water everywhere. You are only watering the weeds. Do not water the leaves of your plants either. Wet leaves that did not have time to dry off during the day can get mildew and other plant diseases that will wipe out your garden. Control your watering by buying a watering wand for the hose. This is eco-green as it saves water and time weeding.

If you are really starved for room in your yard or live in a condo or an apartment, try growing a few things in five gallon buckets. Box stores sell the pails for a few dollars and they are clean and never used. Be careful using used spackle pails as the residue in them is not healthy for plants. The have to be scrubbed very well and rinsed several times. Tomatoes are a favorite container veggie to grow. Using any of the plant fertilizers available and good watering practices, you can grow tons of tomatoes with very little work.

Another great almost fool proof garden project for kids are herbs. There are hundreds of types available and take almost no effort at all. Rosemary, thyme and parsley can all be grown in a small flower pot and added to your meals for free seasonings. These herbs can be harvested over and over all summer long and after drying some, will provide seasonings all winter as well. Plant some marigolds and the kids will see them sprout, grow and bloom in a very short time Color in the garden is important as well. A small area planted with various cutting flowers provides color all summer and can brighten your kitchen as well. The kids get so excited and can't wait to show me the new sprouts each time they visit the garden.

You can get two crops with your garden. One crop to eat and a brand new crop of young future gardeners as well. What a deal for a few cents worth of seed packets.

Wonderful baby memorabilia will be many things. The first example could be a photo of your children. In making pictures of your child's fun. The funniest thing is when you look over the years will remember the great times.

The second example I saved Kid, some of his shirts. His first suit for example. Although we do only a small sleeper, I keep it. I intend to make a blanket from his clothes only.

The thirdArticle I will keep the early beginning of my baby quilts are the only ones that his grandparents have produced for him. He sleeps with them yet. If it grows, colors or special arrangements I make those clear to him. This is something that is passed on from generation to generation.

Memory fourth is his favorite toy. My son in the first nine months of his time, preferably only a toy. He estimated the plush blue dog with a bellit. I keep it on my bed nearby, because it is something that had fallen in particular the car!

The last thing you would save is obviously just the generic stuff that keep many mothers. I keep the hair from his haircut. I am starting his own lost tooth, and his drawings.

Having said all that is keeping critical to your child about. Some time later he has to go through them all and decide you may need to get rid of a few things from your list. TheSell selection is everything. Remember, the main memory is your children.

Silver 25th Anniversary Party

Does someone you know have a silver Anniversary coming up? If so, a theme party is the perfect way to celebrate their big day. You can stick to a silver theme, or use any theme the couple likes such as a luau or a costume party.

Every store with party supplies will have 25th Anniversary supplies. Plates, tablecloths, cups, napkins and decorations all come in silver colors. Wedding bells and hearts also coordinate to celebrate the wedding Anniversary. Invitations can have bells, hearts or other wedding related themes to send out.

Have guests bring in their favorite memory from the wedding (if they attended!) If they were not acquainted with the couple then, write down their favorite current memory. Put these memories into a silver guest book or scrapbook for a gift to the couple. Sharing the memories during the party depends on how much time you have and how many guests are present. If it is an Open House style party, sharing at one time would be difficult with people coming and going.

Games during a game anniversary limited if it is a formal event. Many times dinner to celebrate not include many children, if at all. If it is coordinating a loose theme party, choose games with your topic.

personalized gifts can be given to the couple fee. Frames, photo albums and silver bowls or trays can be carved all special occasions. Party-supply shops and souvenir shops you will have a directpersonalization place if they can't provide it.

Take pictures of every guest with the couple celebrating their Anniversary. Send them out in thank you cards after the party and let them know how much you enjoyed them celebrating your day. The pictures can also be used in scrapbooks later.

Cheap Yard Butler TNT-4 Yard Butler #TNT-4 Garden Twist & Tiller

Wednesday, June 16, 2010 0 comments

I found it a great tool. I had about a 15' x 15' area in need of tilling and seeding. While it took a few hours it did the job. Granted this tool not really designed for that large a space, so I consider this "big job" a one time thing.

However, the tool will be great for use in tilling and seeding some small areas in my yard and especially in tight areas. Seemed quite sturdy.

One suggestion. Don't drive the tool down all the way initially in compacted ground as it will be hard to twist. Do a little at a time, increasing depth. But really half way in is all the depth you need to till soil for seeding.

Unique design tills the soil with a twisting action. Durable tool features twisted tines, a crossbar to step on for penetrating hard soil and a long cushioned T handle for leverage and comfort.

A great workout - Tony Smith - Goldsboro, NC
This tool is very rugged and durable, and was much better than what I expected. I was able to tear through the soil easily, and gt a good workout in the process. It does have some heft to it, but that helps give it momentum to pierce the ground. I pick it up about 6-inches, then drop it in. The only time I had to use the step (which fit even my big feet) was on harder packed ground.

Great Tool - B. Moore - Finger Lakes, New York
I love this tool. I did not want to buy a tiller since I was not planning to do a big garden. It works great for my small space. Great exercise tool as well-- gets your arms and legs working. If you have really hard, compacted soil like mine, you might benefit from using a spade first. Then the yard butler, and what a butler it is!

Yard Butler Does ALMOST everything - T. Garrett - Tri-Cities, WA
This simple tool works great for small areas. We have rocky soil and it worked fairly well. It does not till much area at once, so it is a bit repetitive but it works perfectly. It even pulls weeds for you! :) I love it and I can even get my husband to do a little gardening too! Double Bonus!

How to find the right gardening ideas for your garden

If you're looking to make the most of your garden, then you might already know what you're going to do, and how you're going to do it. However, if you need a bit of inspiration, then here are some ideas of where you can look.

1. General interest as well as dedicated gardening magazines can give you plenty of ideas. Perhaps there's a fashion shoot outside, or an interview with a celeb in their garden, or perhaps there's a gardening magazine that appeals to you because they're transforming a garden similar to yours. You'll get lots of good ideas from magazines.

2. TV programmes and gardening TV programmes in particular will give you a lot of inspiration and allow you to see flowers and plants, as well as gardening techniques in more detail. Perhaps you're favourite show has a house with a garden, or maybe you'll see someone else's garden on the news, or perhaps you religiously watch a gardening programme and will design your garden based on what you've learned.

3. Gardening books can prove to be useful too. Perhaps you'll buy some of your favourite gardener's books and see what you can learn. It can prove to be a bit expensive, and what might be all the rage when the book is written, might not stand the test of time, so you might want to choose gardening ideas that don't date.

4. When you're about, whether walking or driving, on the bus or on your way home from work, you're bound to see other People gardens. Some of them may have ideas and themes you want to use.

Cheap Fiskars 9664 Fiskars Cultivator #9664

I'm a tall guy and love the extra long handle. The working angle of the tool is great and it easily breaks up hard soil. The tine end is nice and small and works well around obstacles. The only minor issue I've had is the plastic cover at the top of the handle comes off when I'm working. It slips right back on but it's irritating. The weight and balance is great. I'd definitely recommend it. I may try a dab of hot glue to keep the handle cover from slipping.

Unique teardrop shaped shaft is comfortable and easy to grip. Offset, arrow-tipped tines rip into the densest soil and tough weeds. Non-stick coating is easy to clean and rust-resistant. Lightweight aluminum handle guarantees no splinters. Hard rolled steel head attached with a ferrule.

lite and easy weed remover - Lynda M. Gavens -
This cultivator is easy to use, easy on the back, and saves time. This is the one tool I always take when I go to the garden. The three tine design with the arrow head ends really work very well, grabbing up the unwanted weeds/or other unwanted stuff.
As a senior gardener this works very well for me. Fiskars has the best tools.

Great Product - CMM - Southeast IL
Husband needed a new hoe/cultivator. Read other reviews on this product and ordered because of the favorable reviews. He couldn't be happier. Whenever he uses it he says - "I can't believe how easy this thing works!"

It arrived promptly, it is very lightweight, but, sturdily built. Great product - just like other Fiskars products. Highly recommend!

Fiskars Cultivator #9664 - spooky - N.J. USA
a fine product, light, well balanced and easy for around the garden work, not for rocky soil formation and it's not a general purpose tool, so if your are using Fiskars products, keep in mind they are specific tools built for specific purposes, don't abuse them for the wrong purpose and you will end up breaking them.

Graduation Theme Party Ideas for Your Graduate

Saturday, June 12, 2010 0 comments

Receiving a diploma is a coming-of-age ritual that deserves some attention and that is why a Graduation theme party is such a great idea. Whether your special someone has graduated from grade school, high school, or college, they have passed a milestone in life that should never go unnoticed. While hosting a graduation theme party for a younger child is not much different than throwing a birthday party or other random get-together, having a guest list of adults and young adults can be just a bit trickier to plan. For the high school or college graduate there tends to be a guest list that includes everyone from Grandma, Uncle Mo and his wife Jane, to half (or more!) of the graduating class. A wide variety of ages and interests to say the least. One way to handle such a diverse crowd of people is to make sure that your decorations and food are excellent. This provides a common thread for discussion regardless of who is trying to talk to who.

You can find a great selection of graduation theme party decorations at your favorite on-line party supplier. They will definitely have more options and better prices than your local discount stores and the quality, as always will be great. Then, plan a menu that will not only feed a small army without requiring you to sell the farm, but will please many different types of eaters. For example, how about a taco/nacho bar with different levels of heat available in salsa. The selections could include fish, ground beef, and chicken meat and then lots of other extras like beans, cheeses (different types please!), lettuce, tomato, onions, olives, jalapenos, sour cream, and guacamole. Nacho cheese melt can be kept warm and ready and a nice variety of tortilla chips will add to the fun of a build-your-own set-up.

For activities, play a nice variety of music or even better, consider having a karaoke player set up for any and all (young and old) who may want to give it a shot. One fun activity might be to have some pictures of the favorite and less favorite teachers of your graduate available for a whipped cream pie or water balloon throwing contest. Or, if the crowd is predominantly older, darts. All those years of pent-up frustration at busy work and silly homework assignments.

Be sure to put a power point presentation together with some appropriately embarrassing pictures of the guest of honor and the team of amigos that have always been around. This will ensure some good natured ribbing, and a lot of laughs as everyone sees how they have evolved from youngsters entering kindergarten to the big bad graduates they are today.

Father's Day Presents

Father's Day Presents

Father's Day is just around the corner, so now is the time to come up with great ideas for Father's Day presents that your special guy is sure to enjoy. It can sometimes be difficult to find presents for dad, but one way you can be sure to make your gift recipient happy is to personalize your gift in some way. Personalized Father's Day gifts could include Father's Day gift baskets. You can customize the basket to include gift items that your father enjoys, and even include a few pleasant surprises to make your gift memorable.

If your father has a special hobby that he enjoys, that could make a great starting point for personalized gifts for dad. If crossword puzzles are his joy, why not put together a fantastic basket that features some crossword puzzle books, a crossword dictionary, some mechanical pencils, and even a beautiful mug and varieties of teas or coffees. Food is always enjoyed by whomever gets this super gift, so chocolates, cookies, candies, and pretzels will make a big hit.

Men who enjoy working on weekend projects out in the workshop or garage would be thrilled to get a gift basket with that as its focus. Small hand tools, like an electronic level, or wrenches, or an assortment of screwdrivers are always useful. A new pair of work gloves comes in handy, as do some premium gift snack items that he can munch on while he works away on his activity.

Sports lovers come with a built-in theme for a suitable gift basket for Father's Day. Pick his favorite sport, and go to town with gift items. If it's baseball, then a great baseball cap with his team's insignia on it would be a hit with him, as would baseball cards, or a pennant or banner. Tickets to go see his team play would cause him to jump for joy as well. Everyone loves food, so include some stadium favorites like peanuts and cracker jack.

Many men enjoy getting together with their friends to play cards. If your favorite man is in this group, then a gift basket that has a card theme would be an excellent choice. Game-related gift items like cards, chips, score cards, maybe even some new drink glasses and coasters will be well appreciated, along with some gourmet snack items that he and his friends will love.

The great thing about gift baskets is that they can be personalized to match your father's particular tastes and desires. You can include each item according to what you know he will especially enjoy, and with that you will give him another gift: the fond memory he will have of opening your thoughtful Father's Day present.

Aphids Control and Your Roses

Aphids control is important year-round but must increase in the summer when roses are more susceptible to a range of pests from aphids to fungus. Commercial pesticides are available as well as natural or organic methods for ridding the garden of pests.

We'll look at some basic solutions you can make with everyday household ingredients that won't pollute the environment or harm children. To find commercial organic solutions, check with local garden centers, chain stores, or environmentally friendly retail sources.

Wash The Aphids

Keeping aphids off your roses is no simple task in mid-summer. Roses' number one pest, aphids thrive in dry, hot summers. If leaves on plants are dry, curling at the edges, or disfigured, there may already be a pest issue. A good hard rain or spraying with a hose may wash some of the bugs away. There are other options available to gardeners as well.

Hunt The Aphids

Ladybugs - those cute red and black bugs we sing songs about and incorporate into contemporary design. They love these annoying pests and can be the best aphids control product for your garden. These little bugs can be purchased in bulk from garden shops or internet sites to be released in your garden. Within days, the pesky aphids should be gone, though additional releases of ladybugs will likely be necessary over the summer. Naturally occurring ladybugs are not in sufficient numbers to be effective in pest removal.

Other Critters

For aphids and other bugs, the oldest tactic for bug removal is to pick the bugs off by hand and discard, either by squishing the bugs or placing in a bucket of warm soapy water. Japanese beetles can be effectively eliminated with this technique, the best time to capture them is late evening.

Spider mites also prey on rose leaves, leaving web-like structures on the undersides of leaves. Almost too small to be seen, they are best removed with strong bursts of water.

Commercial or Home-Made?

Organic aphid treatments are the safest for ground water, youngsters, pets and the neighborhood air. Some products can be purchased; some come from the kitchen cabinet. A mixture of garlic juice and ground red pepper or liquid pepper sauce like Tabasco, makes an effective spray which repels not only small bugs, but deer and rabbits as well. Spray it liberally on affected leaves - just avoid getting it on hands or in eyes.

Powdered milk, mixed with warm water makes a very gentle spray for rose plants. Mix ½ cup powder to a quart of warm water. This works for some pests; rain washes this solution away, so frequent applications might be necessary.

There are organic commercial products to kill bugs: sticky traps are little paper tents containing a hormone-like substance. Hung on limbs or stakes, the bugs are lured in and get stuck to the surface. Dispose a full trap away from the garden.

Neem Oil is a popular product, organically made from trees in the tropics. This oil works effectively in controlling a range of rose pests without killing the 'good' bugs. It is safe for animals and will not harm plants in the garden.

Give these products a try and if aphids are still a problem it's time to consult your local rose expert for more aggressive advice. Remember to deal with bugs as soon as possible. Continue watering and feeding for healthier, stronger plants able to resist bugs and fungal diseases.

Cheap EarthWay 6500 Earthway Tubular Steel High Wheel Cultivator #6500

Wednesday, June 9, 2010 0 comments

Wow - eee. It's cool to be nine! And, it's even cooler to get awesome gifts that bring smiles for a 9-year-old's birthday. Nine-year-olds dream of adventure and learning new skills. They appreciate everything that is given them. They love to garden, play games, and share in everything.

Turning nine is a special occasion and here are seven terrific birthday gift ideas to celebrate that happy birthday:

1) Name Scroll. Nine-year-olds love to see their name in handsome lettering across a painted background with a galloping knight in armor, a beautiful kitten, a sensational dolphin, or a sleek jaguar. The scroll tells the name meaning and history and includes famous people with that name. This is an art keepsake that is perfect for framing.

2) Carpet Skates. Any nine-year-old would delight in slipping his or her feet into these "funslides" and gliding over the carpets as if on wings. Carpet skates of many colors can carry you lickety-split from one room to the next and wherever there are carpets. They do not work on bare floors, though.

3) Treasure Hunter. This state-of-the-art metal detector can help find jewels, coins, and other precious objects in the backyard, along paths, in the park or at the playground. This detector even tells what the buried treasure is before anyone starts digging. The detector gives off a sound that gets louder as you get nearer to the treasure. All ages have fun with this sort of treasure hunter.

4) Child's Sewing Machine. This will delight the young seamstress in your life. This battery-run sewing machine comes complete with thread, spindle, and bobbins. She will be proud of the many-colored handkerchiefs, scarves, and doll clothes she makes with her own hands. This is sure to provide hours of fascination for even the most active child.

5) Indoor Herb Garden. With daylight from the window, and a light watering three times a week, an indoor herb garden will flourish in the care of any nine-year-old. Some of the more popular herb gardens contain basil, dill, rosemary, mint, and thyme. Indoor gardens are available at garden shops or from catalogs.

6) Backyard Tent. Can there be anything more fun than spending the evening with best friends in a tent in the backyard? You can outfit the tent with inflatable mattresses and a lantern and listen to ghost stories on CDs. All that is left is to dash back into the house to get cocoa and cookies. Backyard tents come in all shapes such as dinosaurs and whales. They are waterproof and even have a floor and mosquito netting. A tent such as this is sure to make every nine-year-old grin from ear to ear.

7) Jewelry-Making Kit. Making jewelry is fun for everyone in the family. Colorful plastic beads for necklaces and bracelets as well as rings with interchangeable stones are just a couple of the items you can make with kits. Braided ribbon jewelry and 3-D paper jewelry are big hits - to say nothing of jewelry with reflectors and flashing lights. This last one looks cool in the dark.

Remember, when you are searching for gifts that bring smiles for a 9-year-old's birthday, think of one of these great gift ideas. It will make everyone at the party happy. Have fun!
