Create a house cleaning check list and following the list all week, organizing helps make the household chores less of a burden. We all know that house cleaning is time consuming and frustrating, so we must prepare the cleaning checklist. The best reason to have a house cleaning checklist is divides the chores for all the family.

You cleaning checklist does not have to just apply to one or two days a week, you can divide the chores up into several days. This way you can have the one to two chores opposed to several in one day. This is a good idea, start with the least appealing chore to get task out of the way first.

Another good idea, when you are preparing a cleaning checklist list the furniture dusting at the top of the list. This is because dusting sometimes creates residue on the floor. You would not want to vacuum or sweep the floor only to discover you need to redo it once you have dusted.

Some chores that do not need to be done each week that you will want to include on your house cleaning checklist. Dusting behind your appliances, cleaning the oven, and washing the windows are all important tasks. These chores can be placed on your checklist once a month.

Another good idea is to offer an allowance to your children. If you decide to do this you can also teach your child the value of hard work. They will feel better knowing they are earning money and you will appreciate the house cleaning help.

How to Make a Baby Mobile for Fun, Learning and Saving Money

Saturday, May 29, 2010 0 comments

One thing I find strange is how many parents want to make a baby mobile despite all the fancy, high-tech ones they can buy in shops.

I've often wondered why.

If I disregard saving money, the only conclusion I reach is that you can actually make a very good learning toy if you do it right. Unfortunately few parents know how to make one or even what to look for when buying one.

The sad thing is that many parents still believe that commercial baby mobiles are far superior to homemade ones.

But that's not true!

If you make a good one...

- You can vary and change how much stimulation your baby gets

- Prevent your baby from losing interest and keep his attention, thus getting much more "play and learning value" from your mobile

- It's a simple technique for increasing and growing visual stimulation

- It gives you the right way to encourage grasping with one hand and using both hands together at a very early age, and...

- Very few other baby mobiles give your baby the chance to discover the textures and shapes of different objects

So, how do you make a good learning baby mobile?

Step 1: Find a long dowel rod (at least 12mm/half inch diameter) or even a normal yardstick to use as suspender bar for the baby mobile's crosspiece.

Step 2: Fix this dowel or yardstick (suspender bar) to the top of the cot approximately above your baby's chest.

Step 3: Use a piece of cardboard or plastic tube, wooden clothes hanger (removing the wire hook) or even rubber hose as the crosspiece. No sharp objects allowed.

Step 4: Tie a strong piece of string to the middle of the crosspiece. Tie the other end to the suspender bar at the top of the cot.

Step 5: Tie a piece of string to each end of the mobile's crosspiece.

Step 6: Tie small objects to the end of the string tied to the crosspiece. The object must dangle at the distance of Baby's outstretched hand when lying in the cot.

Step 7: Tie other small objects to the same crosspiece, making sure the crosspiece still balances.

Step 8: Finally... make sure that the swing of the crosspiece is such that when Baby grabs an object, he can handle, touch and feel it.

What are the best objects to hang from the crosspiece?

Everyday toys like colorful booties, blocks, rattles, squeaky toys, small plastic bottles and teething rings work well. In fact... you can use almost any child-safe object as long as it's colorful, have different textures and contrasts light and dark colors.

If you want to get even more from your baby mobile...

Tie only a few objects to the crosspiece at a time, but change them more often... maybe once or more often per week. This keeps your baby's curiosity and interest for much longer.

The thing I like about this baby mobile is that it encourages and teaches your baby to use his senses to work together - one of the first skills all infants must master.

Only once this skill has been fully mastered will he automatically further explore and discover the crosspiece objects.

Top Pomeranian Dog Health Problem Issue

The Pomeranian is a cute little breed of dog similar to other little breeds. They make wonderful housedogs because of their loving nature and the way they behave when around people. They act like a little child who wants everyone to know they are welcome. These fluffy little dogs can be a bit aggressive if their owner is upset or in trouble.

Their cute fox like face and pointed ears with soft and silky looking hair make them a beautiful show dog as well as a house pet. The eyes are blackish colored with a bright glimmer of shine. The teeth are very sharp yet thin by nature. The tail resembles the tail of a Pekinese as it crusades forward over the back of the dog. The average height is up to twelve inches with a weight of about fifteen to twenty pounds.

The top Pomeranian dog health problem is the teeth. This concerns owners because if the teeth break or fall out, the dog will have no way to consume food. Feeding hard dog food helps to strengthen the teeth and gums, but many people make the mistake of feeding only soft dog food, which does not benefit the teeth or gums in any way. The overall health of the teeth needs to be clean and you need to take every precaution against tooth decay.

The Pomeranian dog breed does suffer some health problems, but not all bloodlines are at risk. The Pomeranian dog health problems might be a slipped stifle or dislocated patella, which is a small bone by the knee joint. The slipped stifle affects the movement of the dog and can cause pain and depression in the little dog. If you notice signs of leg problems, contact the vet for further tests to determine the exact cause of the problem.

The Pomeranian dog health problem during birth can be saddening if proper knowledge and care is not given. When a female is ready to give birth, a vet may be required due to the size of the female. The puppies will be extremely small fitting three puppies into a man size hand is common. Extra care for the puppies because of their size requires helping the mother with daily care of the puppies. These puppies require extra care until the age of three months in order to properly grow and achieve adulthood.

The ears and eyes need cleaning on a daily business. This dog breed loves to go for walks, but like all little dogs, they do not need to take long walks, as they tend to get tired because of their short legs. These little pups strive with love and touching as they grow into beautiful little companions.

The Pomeranian dog health problem follows suit with other canine breeds. They are susceptible to many other health conditions such as skin disease, allergies, infections and parasites. Keeping the dog healthy requires proper grooming and diet along with exercise.

Cheap Fiskars 7877 Fiskars Composite Cultivator #79776931A

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2HUIS16MGCVSR Lots of folks gripe about these great Fiskar composite garden hand tools.

Such people obviously do not garden.

This is the best at what it does: hand cultivation and weeding of your prepared garden beds.

It is not dynamite. It is not a crow bar. It will not extract boulders from your granite stone New England field.

It weeds and cultivates and aerates with minimum of damage your prepared and composted vegetable and flower garden.

The best. Better than metal. Less damage to all involved, including the plants.

Sure, maybe you can find one cheaper at your city's big box shop.

It won't be the fine Fiskar brand name. And you'll waste your own fuel instead of the USPS's gas.

Best tool. All right price. Best at what it does.

Okay. I admit it. It won't plow your lower 40.
But it is not designed to.
Fiskar Garden cultivator, dude. Not John Deere's combine.

Get one.
Not a gardener?
Also a great backscratcher for those hard to reach spots.

Essential Gardening Tips For Beginners

One tip that can help you out is to make sure you have the proper tools. The tools that you need are going to depend on the size of your garden, but if it is a smaller size and you have workable dirt you just need a hoe and shovel.

However if your garden is large or the dirt is clay like you might want to consider purchasing a tiller to make it easier for you. One tool that you will need no matter what size is going to be a little gardeners trowel to dig the smaller more precise holes that you need to plant your seeds in.

You will also want to make sure that the plants that you choose will grow in your regions. Each plant likes a different environment to grow in. Since that is the case you might find that you are going to get discouraged and fail if the plants you pick do not take off.

However, before you even purchase you need to make sure that you are picking plants meant for your region. For example if you live in Alaska you are not going to try to grow an Orange tree outside. So make sure that you read the labels for each plant carefully.

Something else to consider would be to take and ensure that your soil is prepared properly. This is the back breaking part of the job because you need to make sure that you turn all the dirt, fertilize it if needed, and weed it.

The fertilizing is actually very easy to do, but the hard part is the turning of the soil which is why you need to have the proper tools. The weeding is going to be a continuous job for the entire growing season because if your plant is able to thrive without fighting others for water and nutrients you will see your garden flourish with new growth and blooms for you to enjoy later in the season.

Just starting out with gardening can be a difficult thing to do for many people, but it is a fun thing to do as well. However, the difficulty level can drop drastically if you have the proper gardening tips to help you succeed in your garden.

Fun Family Home Decorating Project - Window Well Diorama

Is that a diorama in your basement...or is that a dinosaur in your casement? That could be the opening line of a Dr. Seuss book, or it could be a silly rhyme you make up while having some family fun.

Here's a terrific home decorating project the whole family can participate in. It's not expensive, it will just take an hour or two, and the results are a standout conversation piece with long-lasting decorating value.

You literally can make a diorama in your basement if you are lucky enough to have one or more of those big window wells in your basement. (First you have to be lucky enough to have a basement. If you don't have a basement, read the end of this article.)

The big egress window wells are eyesores--who wants to look at that much galvanized metal or concrete? But those big window wells are just what you need for this project.

You can make a diorama out of the deep well by lining the curved window well with a decorative scenic liner to make the backdrop and then by customizing the foreground with whatever materials you choose--landscape materials like rock or mulch, driftwood, boulders, figurines or sculptures, water features, and artificial or potted real plants. If you have a window well grate covering the opening at the top, you could even hang items down from the grate using clear fishing line. Think about flying birds, insects, and pterodactyls! Or how about jumping dolphins, whales, or fish! Each person in the family can contribute to the project by adding an item to the scene.

That scenic backdrop serves two purposes--it covers up or camouflages the ugly metal or concrete window well, and it provides a gorgeous scene to enjoy.

You can find just what you need to make the backdrop at http://windowwellscenes.com/. Do you want a colorful perennial garden right outside your window? Or maybe you would like a serene waterfall. You might wish you had a mountain or river view. Or perhaps you'd like to live on a golf course. There are beautiful and impressive scenes of a woods, canyon, lake, and countryside. If you're into sunrises, there's a gorgeous one available. Paradise awaits with the dramatic ocean scene with lots of sand and palm trees. Add a miniature beach chair and beach umbrella or a bucket and shovel, and you're there.

Every one of the scenes could make an impressive focal point in your basement. Just make your choice, collect the items you want to add, and you have the makings of a great family decorating project. You will have a great time together!

Oh yes--if you don't have a basement or you don't have window wells, these huge scenic panels make great one-piece wall murals. Since they are waterproof, they can be wiped off if anything splashes on them. Just staple or tack the panels up on the wall. Trim them out with wood molding, and they will look like huge framed art on the wall.

Your family can still have fun adding things to the pictures like plastic bugs. Now where is that hot glue gun?

Trim and Shape Your Garden Hedge With Ease With a Cordless Hedge Trimmer

Tuesday, May 25, 2010 0 comments

The cordless hedge trimmer is a piece of gardening equipment you will need to keep your garden hedge in pristine condition. In this article we will explain some of the advantages and disadvantages the cordless hedge trimmers have compared to other hedge trimmer types.

One main advantage with the cordless hedge trimmer is the actual weight of the unit, this can be considerably lighter than the petrol engine type trimmers you can get. This gives you more flexibility and ease of movement when cutting your hedge, being able to maneuver the trimmer with ease due to the light weight gives you much more control when trimming hedges. Also the petrol/gas type trimmers will create a lot of noise when in use, plus they also emit exhaust fumes when in operation which could be a problem if you are breathing them in for a hour or two when working.

The advantage the cordless has over the electric cable type is that you will not have to run an electric cable the full length of the garden to cut your hedge, it can also work out to be expensive to buy a long enough electric cable if you have a large garden. The other benefit with a cordless trimmer over the cable type is that you will not have to worry about cutting through the cable when trimming your hedge, this allows you to concentrate on the actual cutting process with the knowledge there is no cable in the way to hinder your progress.

One disadvantage of the cordless hedge trimmer is that on one charge of the battery it will probably only give you 30 minutes of cutting time, the time period that your battery lasts for will depend on the thickness of the branches in your hedge that you are trimming. One great way to double your cutting time with a cordless trimmer is when you actually buy the trimmer make sure you purchase an extra battery at the same time, this allows you to have one battery charging while you are using the other battery to cut your hedge.

You should take in to consideration the actual size of your garden hedge before making a decision on which trimmer to buy, you should also check the thickness of the majority of branches in your hedge to help you make the decision on the correct type of trimmer to buy. One general rule is that if most of the branches in your hedge is over 8mm thick then you should look at purchasing one of the more powerful petrol type hedge trimmers, but for the average garden hedge the cordless hedge trimmer is perfectly capable of producing a great looking neat and tidy hedge in a reasonable amount of time.

So if you have been struggling with your old garden hedge trimmer and decide that it is time for a new one, then check out some of the new types of cordless hedge trimmer online and always read the manufactures safety operating instructions before use.

Decorating with park benches is also very affordable.. The wooden garden benches are available in various types of wood, like sheesam, bamboo, oak, teak, pine and other types of wood. ( pine doesn't last long outdoors). The better choices for garden benches are cedar, redwood or cypress, with teak being the best and most expensive of the lot
.
Cedar is stylish

A cedar garden bench might just be perfect place for "sitting the next one out" and resting in the shade as you watch. Your cedar garden bench or benches will definitely be a big part of what gives your yard or garden that picturesque look you want.

Well-made cedar garden benches will remain in good shape for a long time, and do not require any considerable amount of upkeep such as refinishing etc

Cedar furniture often comes in sets, using extra chairs and wooden tables as well. Garden benches are perfect for a get together, a card game, for a cup of tea, or just for a relaxing time at home.

Stone is an option

Depending on the stone used for the garden bench, the cost of the bench will vary. A marble stone bench costs more than a granite stone bench but the life of both types of stone benches is about the same. You will however probably need cushions to get the comfort factor.

Consider a traditional Teak Bench

Teak patio benches are considered a top choice since this particular wood is the best for facing outdoor elements. It is a dense wood, and has a high oil content, which helps it withstand the elements in the outdoor environment.

This wood is naturally resistant to insects, warping, splintering and the elements, which makes it an ideal wood for creating furniture.

The main quality or asset of this wood is that it offers time less beauty, durability and style to make the teak patio furniture the envy of one's neighbors.

Keep it looking good for longer !

If your garden furniture is made of wood, make it a habit to regularly check for splintered wood or cracks. With dozens and dozens teak wood bench styles to choose from, create an outdoor focal point for your yard or garden

.Teak is a beautiful wood, but it will only looks its best if you take good care of it. Make sure you get proper teak oil, too, not just a finish. Sometimes it's better to buy it from boat and marine suppliers, as teak is a very popular material on boats. This luxuriant hardwood has abilities to withstand the rigors of adverse climates. Teak is resistant to water, weather and warping, allowing it to withstand season after season of use.

Top Tip

Make sure your teak garden furniture is kiln dried to optimise moisture content and ensure shape is maintained and cracks are eliminated.

Rustic is popular right now

Some rustic log patio furniture items including benches should also be on your list if you wish to have a great looking and, at the same time, extremely functional outdoor area. Log style benches are priceless when it comes to seating a lot of guests. Redwood is used mostly because of its durability. Patio benches are especially important and you can luxuriate in comfort when you place some good quality patio furniture cushions on them.

Wrought Iron looks sophisticated

Another classical piece of metal garden furniture is the single ornate iron bench, which can really set off a Victorian style garden. . The result is elegance and a classic look that is perfect for any patio. Finally, wrought iron is often used for patio benches that have scrolling, and a rich style. Browns and blacks are no longer to be seen as abundantly as turquoises, tangerines, crimsons and chartreuses. Wrought iron furniture has a lot of shapes and curves to it, making it look elaborate and elegant for the English traditional style of décor.

Wrought iron can also go well with other decorating styles since its slender, simple lines make it look plain enough to blend in with almost any outdoor setting.

Finally

You're really spoilt for choice - . Benches can be found in so many styles and designs that are priced to suit any budget, just check out the options that suit your lifestyle and budget.

Are You Addicted to the Web?

Do you spend more time on the Internet then you do with your family or friends? Would you rather post on Facebook on a Friday night then go out to the mall or movie with your pals? If so, you may be addicted to the web. It's not uncommon for people to do lots of things on the web. Some examples of things that you can do on the web that are actually convenient.

· Order food on the web and have it delivered.
· Place an order for a refill of medicine.
· Check your banking balance and/or pay some bills.
· Order a movie from Netflix and watch it on your TV
· Pick up a birthday gift for your niece and have it sent to her.
· Compare the prices of a particular item that you are thinking of purchasing.
· Keep in touch with high school buddies or college friends.

These are all good use of the web and there are tons more.

· Take an online class.
· Play a game with someone across the world.
· Order a duplicate birth certificate, license or social security card.

There are so many reasons why the Internet makes our life easier but let's keep in mind that if we are spending more time with our computer we may be neglecting someone that actually wants to spend time with us. Get out, take a walk, go to the actual movie theater, and buy some overpriced popcorn, live a little. Take your dog for a walk rather than just letting him run in the yard. Go the drugstore and buy a card for someone and then mail it to them. It's a thrill getting postal mail these days rather than an ecard.

Its' wonderful that we have high tech features that we are accustomed to but let's not forget the small things. Show your 5 year old how to ride a bike or go to a drive in movie. Some cities actually still have these. If you have a healthy balance between work and play you're fine but if you spend more time on the computer than you do with your spouse you may be headed into trouble. Just keep that in mind the next time you go to update your Facebook status. Even the sun can burn you if you get too much of it.

The Mystery of Furry Animals

Friday, May 21, 2010 0 comments

Comfort! Everyone wants comfort. Air-conditioning systems have
been invented for the purpose of providing comfort to the
inhabitants of buildings. The science of psychometry was
developed to understand the properties of the air - the
temperatures, humidity and the heat values.

However, the human body, a marvelous piece of creation can
adjust itself to changing climatic conditions to provide comfort
to the owner. It has become quite common knowledge that sweating
and their evaporation cools down the body.

Have you tried wrapping yourself in a plastic sheet? You will
feel warm because of the air trapped within the sheet. However,
after a while, you will sweat and you will feel very
uncomfortable indeed. Why?

It has to do with what air-conditioning people call the comfort
zone. According to them, most people will feel comfortable
between 70 to 78 degree Fahrenheit at about 50% relative humidity
wearing light clothing and when seated or at rest and without
much wind.

There is also a difference in comfort levels when we do different
activities. When we feel comfortable wearing woolen jackets to
keep warm while we are at rest, don't we feel uncomfortable when
we are running or doing strenuous activities? Clearly just
wearing a jacket will not automatically make us more comfortable.

On a hot day, you will want to take off everything. Well, society
dictates that you cannot do that, or you will be charged with
indecent behavior. Anyway, that's the easiest way to become
comfortable. The body's thermoregulatory action will make your
comfortable automatically.

In nature, the body has a very good self-temperature regulatory
action. When we sweat, the latent heat of vaporization takes away
the heat from the body. However, if the sweat were to be
evaporated, a person with all the sweat glands fully opened up
can even feel a chill. Putting on clothing will hinder that
process of evaporation.

In cold weather, how would you want to wear just a thin piece of
clothing, instead of layers after layers of thick clothing? You
don't want to look like an astronaut with their bulky suit, do
you? You might look a bit too fat and clumsy!

Moreover, some clothing will retain the water, so much so that
even when the outside is cold, you are actually sweating inside.
That's the condition of condensation. The same thing happens when
a glass of cold water is put in a warm atmosphere. The water
comes out from the air around the glass and become water droplets.
Your body becomes wet from your perspiration.

You become uncomfortable.

How do furry animals keep warm or cool? They don't wear clothing
like humans. They seem to be able to adjust their body
temperatures in their fur to all weather conditions. Can that be
duplicated?

Scientists have been searching for the solution to comfortable
all weather clothing for ages. They were searching for that
special fiber that can duplicate the thermoregulatory action of
a human body and yet feels comfortable to wear.

They have tried using capillary action of closely spaced fibers
to draw the liquid from the sweat to the surface and then to
evaporate. However in order to be effective, the fabric need to
be worn close to the skin in order to transport the moisture.
Whenever the capillary fabric gaps, the draw is broken and it
becomes ineffective. The result - heat is lost for the wearer.
Wearing tight clothing can be quite uncomfortable sometimes.
Maybe they are not so fashionable, or just do not fit the many
different body sizes.

The latest technological breakthrough lies in utilizing
electrostatic charges in the fibers. Scientists are now able to
move moisture from the body whenever a wearer perspires in warm
temperatures using electrostatic charges in the fibers. As the
wearer's activity decreases, the fabric will reduce the
evaporative process, leaving a constant water barrier between
the wearer and the fabric.

In cold temperatures, a layer of 100% relative humidity is
formed between the skin and the fabric, creating an area of moist
air that holds more heat during cooler temperatures. By using
electrostatic charges to pull the moisture away from the skin,
scientists are able to increase the heat capacity of the trapped
air next to the skin and the wearer feels warm.

Individual molecules are separated much faster and thus favor
evaporation.

These fibers are special.

They actually duplicate and enhance the thermoregulatory actions
of the body! They create a vapor barrier to keep you cool when
the weather is warm and warm when the weather is cold.

Truly a technological breakthrough!

Start the New Year With a New Clean Up For Your Lawn

Wednesday, May 19, 2010 0 comments

Spring isn't quite here yet, but that is even more reason to get a head start on some spring clean up for your garden. Winter may not have been harsh from your perspective, but the winds and rains may have done damage to your lawn that will need some fixing up before they can start growing and producing come spring time. Some of the things to focus on if you want a great looking yard are: Spring Clean Up, Bed Prep, Turf Prep, and Composting.

Spring Clean Up

Raking Leaves is an essential part of any lawn clean up. Keep in mind to rake your leaves gently, so as not to cause damage to any new or budding grass plants. Be on the lookout for other fallen debris besides leaves, such as twigs or branches. Leaves and other debris can smother your lawn, causing bare patches. If you notice areas of your lawn that look matted down, it is probably due to a turf fungus called snow mold, which can be treated by simply raking the area and making sure there are no leaves or other obtrusive debris covering it.

Take care of bare patches. Any bare spaces or spots you see on your lawn should be be patched up and ready to go for spring. These spots on your lawn can make your lawn seem ugly and not well-maintained. Whether these spots were caused by a lawn disease such as gray leaf spot or brown patch, you will need to pull up the dead or discolored areas and add in new grass seeds and fertilizer, while taking care to keep the area moist until new new grass starts growing.

Reevaluate your tools before you pick them up to use in the spring. Some tools you keep in the shed or garage may be outdated or may just need a revival. Check your lawn mower to see if it's still in good shape before you use one. You may find that you it needs an oil change or its blades need to be sharpened. In other cases, you may have to replace your lawn mower completely.

Bed Prep

While the winter season gave you an excuse to take a break from your lawn, now is the perfect chance to see what kind of good you can do to prepare your lawn bed for any planting you may want to do in time for the spring.

To prepare a bed, follow these simple tips:

Clean up anything that you don't want in the bed, such as unwanted vegetation, including weeds. Removing weeds or turf grass can be done manually with a shovel. Alternatively, you can use an herbicide treatment. Be sure to follow all label directions if you choose to use a herbicide.
After you've removed the weeds or turf grass or whatever unwanted vegetation from your soil bed, flip the soil over to at least eight inches deep, using a shovel or spade and separate out the large clumps.
Add on any compost to the newly turned soil. You can use compost that you've collected, or buy it in bags from your local city services or gardening store. Natural and organic compost is always the more friendly alternative to chemical fertilizers, which can be harmful to not only your lawn, but to the environment as well.
Make sure that any compost you add is blended evenly into the bed soil. You can do this by hand or by using a cultivator or garden tiller. Smooth the top layer of the bed over, while shaping the sides. You are now ready to plant!

Turf Prep

Basic Clean Up and Soil Prep
Similar to a bed prep, turf prep includes some clean up of the area where you are planning to apply the new turf grass. Though not necessary, you can add in compost or other soil amendments. However, you must be careful not to simply apply the soil amendment as a layer directly on top of the existing soil. Instead, it should be blended into the top 200 millimeters of the soil to prevent the root system from only staying in the top layer. Blending it will encourage your turf to have better drought resistance and to take up any nutrients you apply more easily. You may also want to apply a moisture-wetting agent to the soil and and water it in to make sure that the soil doesn't dry out from being moved around.

For some leveling action, you should remove all debris like rocks and other loose items and keep the area as smooth as possible.

Laying Down the Turf
It's important to lay your turf down within 24 hours of bringing it to your home. If left for more than a day, the turf can dry up and become ruined. If the turf arrived in plastic, it can cause the turf to begin decomposing and give off heat, which will dry it up and turn the turf a less than green color.

When you lay down the turf, you will want to do a border around the outside to keep it neat and clean-looking. Then proceed to find the largest area of straight ground and start there while working toward the outside. Be sure to trim around sprinklers if you have any. Lastly, you should bunch up the edges and ends up while you work to prevent the edges from drying out.

After the turf has been laid, you will need to monitor the condition of it to make sure it does not dry out. Watering your new turf frequently and after it has been planted is essential to maintaining the new turf, since it has no root system to rely on. Depending on the weather, watering two to three times a day should give enough water. You can also lightly sand between the edges of the turf pieces to preclude drying out.

After the new turf has settled in some and the roots are established, you can look forward to your beautiful new lawn in time for spring.

Better tools available - Thomas Gibson - Camas, WA USA
I read in a number of places after I got this tool that there are better wheel hoes available. Elliot Coleman for one recommends one that fits the description of the Glaser Wheel Hoe exactly. First of all because of the way the tools mount on this one it does an inefficient job of transfering the energy to the soil. The tools that come with it are very light weight and the range of tools available isn't as great as with other manufacturers. This is more of a replica of an antique although it gets some basic jobs done. The fact that it doesn't have any of the improvements made in tools like this from other manufacturers mean that you have to do a lot of things twice or more to get the job done. I got the wood handled version which I was glad of because it is stronger and heavier. The handles unfortunately were completely raw wood so I had to buy some primer just to feel good about taking this out for the first time. Some of the hardware used to attach tools was weak and bent the first time it was used and the instructions how to assemble the tool were useless. The box was ripped when I got it because the packaging is shoody and I felt lucky that some of the small part bags didn't get lost during shipping. The wheel axle is just a piece of pipe that runs on a piece of round stock. Since that fitting is rather sloppy it makes it easier for the wheel hoe to not track as straight as it might and cause several course corrections when doing a pass down a row.

The fact that this is the only wheel hoe available on Amazon.com is unfortunate. I thought I was getting a great deal when I used a Amazon gift card to get this tool and now I am thinking I only got what I personally paid for. I am able to do most of what I wanted to do with this tool but wouldn't recommend it to someone looking for a wheel hoe.

Do Riding Mowers Hurt Your Health?

Riding Mowers could hurt your health by keeping you from getting more physical exercise. I was probably one of the last ones to get a riding mower.

It seemed that all my friends were riding for years before I did. Partly because I was raising a family and might not have been able to afford one, or maybe I was just used to pushing a mower since my yard wasn't that big anyway.

The big day did finally arrive. My first rider, and it was great! Why did I wait so long? Now I'm even mowing part of the highway right-a-way just to have more grass to cut.

Now let's get back to the original question, do riding mowers hurt your health. They really do in a way.

I used to get a lot more exercise when I just had a push mower. Your arms get a nice workout when your pushing forward, pulling backward, or trimming and changing directions. Your legs stayed in a lot better shape with all the pushing and pulling while mowing flat, or up and down hills.

You also get a great cardiovascular workout. The additional sweat cleans your pores, which helps keep you cooler when working outside. You get more time in the sun and that means more vitamin D.

What's my opinion of the great riding machine? Well, I like it. Especially since I'm getting a little older now. I've learned to still use my push mower as much as I can and as long as I can, and then I switch over to my rider.

Maybe if I would have never gotten a rider in the first place, I could still mow the yard with a push mower, but now I've gotten soft and look forward to the ride.

What's next? Maybe I can get a radio mounted to it, and how about a cab over it with some good cool air conditioning. I don't see that happening for me in the near future. However, I can see me hiring some else to take over the duties of moving my lawn while I'm tanning some wrinkles on the beach somewhere.

Whether pushing or riding your mower, just be sure not to overdue it. Your body will let you know when it's time to rest. Be sure you are listening.

Need a Riding Lawn Mower? Here's What to Look For!

Monday, May 10, 2010 0 comments

Summer is quickly approaching and with that comes a need for keeping your yard and lawn looking fantastic. For some people, this means hiring someone to come over and take care of the work, for others, it means spending the time doing the work themselves. A riding lawn mower is one sure way to make this task a little bit easier. If you're looking to make such a purchase, then there is some information you need to know in order to get your hands on a great mower at a great price!

What Do You Want to Do?

For some people, simply mowing the yard is enough. For others, they want the ability to do everything from mowing, mulching, hauling, and everything in between. There are a number of riding lawn mowers available that can do it all. However, if it's not what you need, then why pay for it? There is no sense in owning the biggest, baddest model to only cross back and forth over your yard a few times!

Consider Comfort Enhancements

It can be a grueling task, especially if you have a large yard or other area that you mow regularly. In the dog days of summer, it's hot and humid, and can be just miserable. There are some riding lawn mowers specifially made with the owner's comfort in mind. They have padded, adjustable seats, comfort wrapped, stay cool steering wheels, and some even have a radio! If you're going to be doing a lot of work, then isn't it best to be comfortable?

Brand Names Matter

You want the most for your money. It's not going to do you much good if you have to drag out the old push mower because the rider is broken down. These can be expensive pieces of machinery to fix, so stick with the brands you know and trust. It's worth it when it comes to performance and durability.

The Best Time of Year to Buy

Most people think that the end of summer and the mowing season is the best time to make this purchase. However, at the beginning of spring, you can find more sales and promotions than any other time of year. Not only do retailers want to move last year's merchandise, they are hoping to sell as many units as they can of the new models. Start looking around March for the best deals.

A Final Thought

A riding lawn mower is certainly going to make your life a little bit easier. After all, isn't that what everyone wants?

Extending Battery Powered Lawn Mower Battery Run Time

I will be the first to tell you that from time to time this summer the juice in the batteries have run out on our solar charged electric lawn mower prior to us finishing mowing our lawn. Yes, it is frustrating to me when this happens ... as the customer service department of the mower manufacturer will tell you.

So, we present to you our tips on how to get the most out of a single charge of the batteries in a battery powered electric lawn mower. And, yes, most of these relate to any electric battery mower, whether solar charged as is ours or another type where the batteries are charged by plugging the battery charger into an electrical outlet:

1. Make Sure The Batteries Are Fully Charged

ry chargers, as ours does, has a light indicator which will go from red to green to indicate when a battery / batteries are fully charged. If you want the electric mower to go as along as possible before the juice in the batteries is fully used, only use the mower when the batteries are fully charged.

2. Raise The Mower Height

Experts agree that it is healthier for the lawn to cut the grass at around 3 inches or so. The higher the grass, the more moisture that will be retained in the ground . So, simply raise the height of your mower.

3. Mow the Lawn More Frequently

With a solar charged mower, it costs you absolutely nothing, consumes absolutely no non-renewable resources and generates absolutely no polluting emissions when you mow the lawn. So, mow the lawn more often. Why not? The more frequent you mow the lawn the shorter the grass will be when it is mowed which in turn will cause the mower to work less hard. Especially with the constant rain that some parts of North America have been experiencing this summer, the grass is growing very, very fast. So, don't mow your lawn only on Friday evenings or Saturday afternoons per a usual summer. Mow twice a week. And, with the self-propelled feature, it won't take that much more effort on your part either.

4. Do Not Use the Optional Mulching Blade

Per manufacturers of lawn mowers, many times the mulching blade can use more power from the batteries. And, it's not really the optional mulching blade itself; rather, it would be the containment of the blades of grass staying inside the mower base making the engine use more power. Compare this to when a mower is not used in mulch mode but when the bagging option is used or when the grass leaves the mower as soon as it is cut to the side or rear of the mower.

5. Self-Propelled Feature

Any mower's self propelled feature requires energy. In the case of an electric lawn mower, that energy is from the batteries. So, simply stop using the self propelled feature if you think that the batteries may not have been fully charged, or if the grass seems thicker than usual. Sure, you will get a better workout than if you used the self-propelled feature. However, what is more important to you: ease of use or length of use?

6. Avoid Early Morning Mowing

Where we live there seems to be a neighbourly protocol where one does not mow the lawn before 9 a.m. during the week and Saturday's and not before 10 a.m. on Sundays. For lawn mowers using batteries, this is a good rule. A better rule would be to not mow the lawn in the morning at all. Why? Well, over night, dew forms on the grass. Mowing the lawn when the grass is wet, either from the morning dew or from a recent rain storm makes the mower work harder, consuming more energy. If you wait until after all of the morning dew has evaporated from the grass, it will be easier to mow, take less of an effort from the mower and thus allow the batteries to run longer in a single mow.

7. Alternate Mowing The Front and Back Yards

The most typical approach to mowing a lawn is to mow both the front and back yards at the same time. Well, why? It takes only half as long to mow just the front or just the back yard at a time (assuming that your front and back yards have similar amount of lawn space). So, if you want to be sure that a battery electric lawn mower will not use up all of the battery charge during the mow, just mow the front or the back.

Learn More About Landscaping and Gardening

Here are some tips which worked well with me. To help get started with your garden, here are some tips which worked well with me. Lots of information and tips on gardening are easily accessible on books and magazines on gardening, the internet and your local nursery. To get started there is a wide range of information you would like to know. Then the question of the types of tools you need, along with the kind of tiller and the type of watering system which would be required.

Tip #1: Pull out the paper and start planning your garden because the time this will save will be huge. Take the help of a friend if needed. First make sure how you want your garden to look.

Gardening Tip #2: The way you have prepared your soil can decide whether you succeed in your gardening efforts. Their needs vary. For the natural flavor to remain in your food, use organic fertilizers in your vegetable or herb garden. Instead of using ordinary fertilizer, try using any good compost or even wooden chip mulch.

It is a blessing when it starts to provide you with the returns. While fresh home brew compost is rich in nutrients, it might prove to be unrealistic for the herb and vegetable garden. While mulch is a viable alternative to home compost mixture, but ensure that you are using softer woods which break faster, like redwood or pine. Ensure that you mix the ingredients well whether you prefer to use mulch, compost or fertilizer.

Instead lay the plants on top of the soil to check once and for all how your garden would ultimately look like. At least that is what I feel. For instance, all plants which have similar radius should be planted close to each other. Then, if you arrange the plants in such a way that the taller ones are at the back with the shorter ones in front, then you can see all the plants together.

Never forget this. A tough task is to keep at it. An automatic watering system is best since it works on its own. Choose anything from a large sprinkling system to a time on a hose - your automatic watering system can provide many options. Gardening can be one of the most rewarding experiences - providing you with shade, beauty and at times food!

This is by far the best tool hand cultivator who has ever used. They are usually metal spikes with points scored at the end of this tedious, and that ridge more or less of the dirt, rather than move them.

This tool has three metal spikes large and widely distributed, dirt moving very efficiently there are powerful (and do not bend or flex when you try to dig a large rock from the ground), and no it's nothing too boring.

I recommend this tool for allWorking in the garden. If I could only two gardening, I chose a blade (for large earth moving), and this tool (for all others).

I used it well last week, when I put in a brick mowing edge to "lift the edges of the lawn from the street. Beneath it all hooked and pulled the piece of grass / roots of the way without tearing. I established once when I was finished.

Wheel Horse tractors have developed a reputation for reliability, performance and convenience. Going Green With Push Reel Lawn Mowers

Tuesday, May 4, 2010 0 comments

With the national average price of gasoline at over $4 per gallon, it's no wonder people are trying to come up with ways to save money on gas. One of the major trends in the U.S.A. right now is switching from gas lawn mowers to good old fashioned push reel lawn mowers. Manual mowers offer plenty of advantages over gas mowers, especially in regards to their effects on the environment. These mowers have come a long way from your grandpa's push reel mower.

Newer push reel mowers are lighter than they used to be, and easier to push. They also can include features like easy to adjust cutting heights, grass catchers and sharpening kits. Unlike gas mowers, they don't guzzle the money from your wallet with high gas prices, and are generally cheaper than gas mowers in the first place. They also don't make noise like gas mowers, which will have your neighbors thanking you if you like to mow early in the morning or right in the middle of their family barbeques on Sunday afternoons. Unlike most electric mowers, they don't require any kind of cords, which saves you the hassle of remembering to plug them in.

Gas mowers cause air pollution. They spit out a multitude of things like carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides. These kinds of pollutants affect the ozone, and can be harmful to our health. This alone is a great reason to switch to a push reel mower, as it becomes more and more important for people to use environmentally friendly products and practices.

In addition to the environmental advantages to reel mowers, there are also advantages for your lawn. Gas mowers cut grass with a jagged edge, while reel mowers have a clean cut. Jagged edges mean that your lawn will be more susceptible to disease and moisture loss. You will have a healthier lawn with a push reel motor, and may even become the envy of the neighborhood.

Although today's push reel mowers are much easier to use than in he past, an added benefit is that you may have to work just a little harder than if you use a self propelled mower, which gets your heart rate up (and yes, that does count towards your workout time).

So, whatever your motivation is for looking into push reel lawn mowers, there are definite advantages to them. Who knows? You might just find that while you are helping the environment, you're also helping your lawn (and yourself) be healthier.

Customer Reviews

How to Plant Tulip Bulbs

Saturday, May 1, 2010 0 comments

One of the most exciting things about the springtime is all of the flowers that blossom in your garden. Few flowers provide as much anticipation as tulips that were planted in the fall the year before. Something about letting those bulbs stew over the colder winter months to magically appear in the spring is exhilarating. Not only that, but the tulips can be one of the most beautiful flowers you can add to your yard.

For many young gardeners, planting tulip bulbs can be somewhat intimidating the first time. Something about the fall planting scares many away from the process. When it comes down to it, planting your tulips is actually quite simple.

The first thing that you need to decide is what type of tulip plant you are going to plant. There are 15 different divisions of tulips, separated by their bloom time, parentage, and characteristics. If you have a specific month in which you would like tulips, or if you prefer a particular style of plant, you will want to select your bulbs accordingly.

The bulb should be firm and light colored, with the skin peeling away easily. You should also select bulbs that are heavy for their size. The bulbs can be planted in your garden around 5-6 weeks before the first ground freeze in your area. You want the soil to fall below 60 degrees Fahrenheit, but not yet frozen. The bulb will need sufficient time to lay down roots and establish itself before the cold of winter sets in. Don't worry about the cold too much, as tulips grow naturally in mountainous regions.

For the best chance for success, you will want to prepare the soil before planting. A tiller or other tool to break the soil, followed by composting will give your plants the best chance of success in the spring. Some gardeners will cover the ground with hay or straw over the winter, though this is not necessary for success. The bulb is typically planted to a depth that is 3-4 times its height.

After the bulbs are planted, you are pretty much finished. Be sure to water the bulbs a bit before winter sets in, and then take a break until spring. You will be pleasantly surprised with the work you did in the fall. Freshly bloomed tulips are an excellent addition to your garden. Not only are they easy to plant, but they are a pleasant surprise to end winter and start the spring season.
