Better tools available - Thomas Gibson - Camas, WA USA
I read in a number of posts after I had this tool that hoes best wheel available. Elliot Coleman recommended that the description for the Glaser Wheel Hoe fits. Largely because of the way the tools to do this job mount inefficient energy transfer to the ground. The resulting tools are very light and the range of instruments available is not as great as for other manufacturers. This is a replica of an ancient butget basic work done. The fact that it made no improvement in tools like this from other manufacturers that do too many things twice or more should do the job. I worked on the wooden version, which I was happy because it is stronger and heavier. Handles are unfortunately quite rough, so buy some primer to hear only taking this for the first time was good. Some of the hardware for the fixation was weak and bentFor the first time used and the instructions on how to mount the tools were useless. The case was taken because it broke when I packaging and shoody I was not happy that some are small bags During the transport lost. The wheel spindle is just a piece of pipe, which runs on a piece of round stock. Since this valve makes it rather sloppily easier to track hoe is not straight as it could and more course corrections, if leading, in a step down a line.

TheThis is the only hoe wheel on Amazon.com is regrettable. I have always been when I used a $ 50 Amazon Gift Card, to get this tool and now I'm just thinking about what I paid personally. I can, more than I wanted to do with this tool, but would not recommend it to someone for a wheel hoe.

Planning Your Organic Vegetable Garden - Part Two

Before starting your organic vegetable garden, you need to be clear about where you are going to put it. The choice of location will determine how successful you will be at growing fruit and vegetables or experiencing failure. Here are some suggestions to help you plan and plant your perfect garden.

Think Small. For continued healthy eating and living from your own garden, starting out small is my best advice for your first garden. That's because a small garden requires less work and is easier to maintain. You can experiment and develop your knowledge in small doses. If your plan is to eventually grow for sale, a small starting plot is like putting in solid foundations upon which your garden grows as your knowledge, gardening skills and planning develop and improve.

Sunshine: Consider first the south side of your property to maximise sun exposure. Vegetable gardens need a minimum of six hours of direct sunlight. Check your property and choose the area that will provide that minimum.

Avoid Weeds: Do not locate your garden in an area that's already infested with weeds. Remove the weeds first or, if possible even find a different location.

Water: Place your garden plot near a water supply for ease of management during dry seasons or years.

Drainage: Your vegetable garden needs good drainage. Drainage depends on slope and soil type. However, avoid planting a garden on land with a slope of 1.5 percent or greater. A steep slope means rain will run off. If your land is steep consider terracing to capture water. It is not a difficult exercise but will enable you to garden land that would otherwise be unsuitable.

Check your neighbours property: Look at the surrounding landscape. The roots of nearby trees and shrubs for example can soak up valuable water and nutrients that you will want for your plot.

What to Do About Old Garden Tools

Wednesday, April 28, 2010 0 comments

Gardening is considered a very active hobby that many individuals enjoy. The idea of spending time and energy to make things grow, often in a beautiful arrangement, is quite interesting to many. Gardening requires tools, however, and these can be quite expensive if the would-be gardener is interested in purchasing the latest in cutting edge horticultural endeavor technology. Many other people prefer the simpler tools of the trade and will make do with older style implements such as shovels and hoes instead of motorized equipment such as gas powered or electric tilling machines.

Over time tools become corroded, damaged, or simply loose their edge. When this happens even electrically powered equipment can require repair or at the very least a bit of retooling. The desire to throw away old gardening tools is something many people struggle with but there is no need in many circumstances. The key is to take stock of your tools and determine what is wrong with each of them.

Taking stock of the repair needs of older equipment is very simple. Begin by segregating the gardening implements into different categories. A few suggested categories are edged items with handle such as shovels, edged items with multiple handles such as hole diggers, blunt items such as hammers, motorized items such as electric tillers, items such as rakes that have tines instead of blades, and flexible items such as garden hoses.

An example of how to assess and repair old tools can be made with the edged with handle group selection. Typically the kind of implement one is using when a shovel, hoe, or a planting spear is used would fall into this category. Any gardening equipment that does not require a motor and uses one or two hands to wield will be part of this group. The most important aspect of any of these implements is the edge itself. Edges are made of metal on most modern tools and the things to watch out for are rust, cracks, and whether or not the blade has dulled. Typically a little cleaning and sharpening are all an edged implement needs. A dull shovel doesn't need to be tossed out, a simple bit of sharpening could make it as good as new.

The next item on the agenda would be the handle and the connection to the blade. If the handle seems to be of sound strength without cracks then it is perfectly fine to keep using it. If there are cracks replace it. Most items of this type utilized connector pins or screws to hold the handle to the blade. If the connection is solid and there is no debris within the area of connection this is a good sign. Check to see if the handle wobbles at all. If it does then the handle might be damaged internally where it and the blade connect or the connector might be loose. Tighten the connector if possible, replace it if necessary.

Basic Gardening Considerations

Tuesday, April 27, 2010 0 comments

If you want to start gardening and you are new to it, you may be asking yourself where to start. Starting with the basics will allow you to get outside when the weather is nice and start a garden. You have to educate yourself in what the requirements are for raising and keeping different plants healthy.

You will need to know three basic things. How much water does a plant need. How much sun will the particular plant require. What nutrients the plant will need to survive and thrive.

There are two different ways to go about making sure your plants will thrive. The first is to pick out what plants and/or vegetables you want to grow, then try and make the conditions of your yard suitable to grow them. If you put the plants in an area of your yard, (like against the house), that does not get enough water, you have the option of using a sprinkler or some other type of watering mechanism. You may also have to beef up the nutrients in the soil by using compost or other things. When looking at growing plants in this manner, it really is not the best way to proceed. In fact, it is pretty much the opposite of what you will want to do.

The best way to start off is to Analise the spots where you want to plant. Then you pick the plants that will do best in the conditions that already exist. By doing this you will greatly decrease the amount of work that needs to be put in to keep all of your new plants healthy. Granted, you will still have to do some tender loving care because you will not find all the exact plants that will thrive in your natural soil conditions.

You will also need to determine how much sun or shade a certain area gets if you are going to put plants in it. If you put a plant that requires a lot of sun in a shaded part of your yard, it will get very long trying to reach the spot where the sun is. This will also lead to a lot less flowers or vegetables on the plant.

If you full sun on your yard, put sun loving plants there. If you have shade loving plants, put them in the shade. You do not want to do all the work of planting and preparation only to put the wrong plants in the wrong spots. This will disappoint you and may lead to you not wanting to do a garden again.

Craigslist's Farm and Garden For Sale Section - What You May Find

Monday, April 26, 2010 0 comments

If you want to use Craigslist.org, you will find a for sale section. There are many different categories listed under this heading, including one for farm and garden. In that particular section, what are you likely to find?

Farm animals for sale - Common farm animals listed for sale or even for free on Craigslist include horses, cows, goats, chicken, ducks, rabbits, and more. Many times, a current farmer wants to make room for new animals or eliminate them altogether. Buying farm animals on Craigslist.org is a great alternative to attending local auctions. You may also find pet listings for household pets, such as cats, dogs, birds, and fish.

Farm services extended to the public - It is common for farmers to offer services to the general public. These may include ground tours, summer camps for kids at horse stables, horse boarding, or animal renting. Animal renting is generally reserved for kids. They get an animal to care for on site. They can then use that animal to participate in local 4-H programs and to attend shows. Most services offered to the general public require the payment of a small fee. Ask if a fee is not listed on Craigslist.org.

For sale farm equipment - Unfortunately, many farmers across America are closing down their businesses or decreasing in size. Others regularly update their farm equipment, like John Deere tractors and John Deere lawn mowers. To help offset the cost of a new purchase, they resell the older models. Whether you are a current farm owner or just need equipment, you can find quality equipment and good prices.

For rent farm and garden equipment - Not only can you find equipment for sale, but for rent too. Gardeners regularly need tillers to treat the ground, but only once a year. It isn't worth it to buy the gardening equipment, but it is to rent it for a day or two. Many equipment owners know this, so they list their equipment for rent or even free borrowing on Craigslist.

Whether you are looking to buy or rent farm or garden equipment, buy farm animals, or use services open to the public, you can find what you need on Craigslist.org. To search more than just your local page, but the surrounding area too, download and use a Craigslist search tool to save time and find what you need. Perform multi-city searches with ease.

Save Your Back and the Environment With a Lawn Sweeper

Sunday, April 25, 2010 0 comments

I'm not sure if anyone hates raking leaves as much as I do. As a youngster, my autumn job was clearing all the leaves out of the fence between our yard and the neighbors. It was a great injustice since only about 5% of the leaves (from my estimate) actually came from our trees. So as I was spending the weekend raking and bagging leaves, my friends were out having fun and enjoying autumn.

As I got older, I realized I stilled hated raking leaves, not to mention the strain it put in my back. Bending over to shove the leaves into a lawn bag would surely make my back sore all week. Then a few years ago I discovered the amazing power of a lawn sweeper! If you haven't seen one of these things and hate raking leaves, you might want to think about getting one.

There are two major types of yard sweepers, push and tow behind lawn sweepers. The push sweeper is as it would seem, manual; you push it much like you would a push lawn mower. As it moves across your lawn, the axle spins brushes that sweep up leaves, sticks, and debris into a hopper. Generally the hopper is made of canvas and holds from several cubic feet up to over 16 cubic feet (depending on the size of sweeper).

However, if you're lucky enough (or unlucky to have a huge yard) but have a lawn mower or ATV, you have the option of a tow behind yard sweeper. These, as would be expected, are towed behind a tractor or other powered garden tool. What's so amazing about some of the tow behind sweepers is that you don't even have to get off your mower to dump the hamper.

Obviously the tow behind sweepers is more expensive but can still be found fairly reasonable under $300. If you have a big yard, a large sweeper can save you hours in raking leaves; not to mention your back muscles! Even if you choose the push lawn sweeper, you're still going to save a ton of time and energy. One great by-product of the push lawn sweeper is the non-effect it has on the environment. Unlike the pollutants that leave blowers produce, a push lawn sweeper is manually powered and thus has no carbon emissions. Believe it or not, some municipalities have even banned leave blowers due to their noise; which is another benefit of the quiet lawn sweeper.

Summerizing Your Snow Blower

Wednesday, April 21, 2010 0 comments

It's time to put your snow blower away for the season. Chances are you've already stuck it in the corner of your garage or shed and happily forgotten about it but, trust me, drag it outside and take a little time to prep it for proper storage.

Besides, it's a lot easier to work on it in the natural sunlight of your driveway or back yard than in the thick of a major Winter snow storm. It won't take long at all if you have been taking good care of it. First of all, buy yourself a spark plug, some Winter weight oil such as 5W 20 or 5W30, the same year round oil that most cars use these days. Also, buy some fuel preservative such as Sta-Bi, Store Safe or any other comparable brand.

First off, change the spark plug even though it looks good. It's worth the few bucks for the added benefit of a hot spark on a cold day. It wouldn't hurt to snug down the head bolts in case any of them have become loose. If you don't have a torque wrench, just snug them down while choking up on the wrench handle so as not to over-due it. Use a criss-cross pattern for even distribution.

Chances are the bolts won't even move but it's worth the extra 2 minutes. Top off the gas tank with fresh fuel, leaving enough room for the gas preservative recommendations and start the snow blower up and let it run for 10 minutes or so in order for the preservative to make it's way into the carburetor and it's small orifices and cavities where un-attended fuel turns to varnish and creates a no-start situation come the first snow fall.

Note: There is another school of thought that says to drain the fuel tank and run the carburetor completely out of fuel for storage. In my opinion, flip a coin and do whichever you want. They both prevent the problem of stale fuel plugging up your carburetor.

Next, take advantage of the warm engine to drain the hot engine oil while the nasty sediments are properly suspended and drain out with the old oil instead of staying behind in the Bottom of the cup. Properly dispose of used oil at your local auto repair shop.

If you replace all worn or stretched drive belts and rubber disk if your face is a snow plow. Otherwise, except for the dealer. Lubricate pivot points on the external levers, cables, poles, etc. with WD-40, white lithium grease or a suitable replacement. all these small drainage holes in the pivot and extended time, if they had neverlubricated.

That's it. Enjoy your summer!

Lawn Mower - The Safety Guidelines

Monday, April 19, 2010 0 comments

Although a walk behind or riding lawn mower may not be the most dangerous household power tool, it is certainly capable of causing injury and even death. A lawn mower is a machine that should be treated with respect. So long as the operator follows a simple set of safety guide lines, many serious and potentially life threatening situations can be avoided altogether.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, 68,000 people receive injuries serious enough to warrant emergency room care every year from accidents related to lawn mowers. Fingers and toes are at great risk from the sharp and fast spinning blades under a mower. Objects ejected by the mower at high speeds can also cause injury to the operator of the mower and to bystanders. There are some simple safety tips, that if followed, should greatly reduce the risk of injury while operating a mower.

Before you begin mowing, prepare the lawn by walk over the lawn at least once and look for objects that could be violently ejected such as rocks, toys, dog bones, or any other hard objects. Be aware of any objects that protrude from the ground, such as pipes or large rocks. Running over these objects could either send the object flying out, or even shatter the blade itself. Objects shot out from under the mower can fly at high speeds and cause serious injury.

When you fuel the mower, be sure to clean up any excess fuel that spills outside the tank. Do not fill the tank while the motor is still hot because gas fumes can be ignited by the heat. Instead, wait until the motor is cool enough to touch before you attempt to fill the tank. Change into appropriate clothing before you begin mowing; loose or baggy clothes pose the risk of being snagged by the machine. Also, do not wear open toed shoes.

Before you begin mowing, make sure children are out of the area. If you are on a riding mower, watch closely when in reverse in order to make sure that no one steps behind the mower. Use caution and common sense on slopes - a riding mower may tip over if operated on too sharp of a slope. The operator can also fall onto a push mower, or the mower may roll backwards.

Before engaging in any maintenance on the mower, be sure to disconnect the spark plug wire. Many injuries are caused each year by motors that start unexpectedly when the operator is attempting to do some routine maintenance. Simply turning the blade may cause the motor to start so disconnecting the spark plug wire beforehand will eliminate the risk.

When shopping for a mower, especially a riding mower, insist on a mower that has the best safety features. Ask a sales representative about certain features such as roll over safety on riding mowers as well as safety mechanisms for operating in reverse.

The Fastest Way to Start Your Lawn Mower When It's Been Sitting Idle Since Last Fall

Sunday, April 18, 2010 0 comments

If you're like most home owners who mow their own lawns, you probably find that the first time you go to start your lawn mower in the spring, it is a lot harder to start than it is for the rest of the lawn mowing season. Maybe you get frustrated with it, forget that you aren't a teenager any more, and throw your back out giving the pull-start a furious yank. Maybe you then think to yourself  "I wish I had one of those electric start lawn mowers". If you have an electric-start lawn mower, maybe you are thinking "man, this thing has electric start and it still sounds dead. Thank god I don't have one of those manual start models."

By the time you have been trying to start your lawn mower for a few minutes, you have probably tried some with the choke on, and then maybe your "helpful" neighbor came by and told you that you probably flooded the engine. So maybe you try starting it a few times with the throttle opened up a bit and the choke off. If you have a manual-start machine, you may be contemplating your impending chiropractic bill, and wondering whether hiring the neighbor's kid to mow your lawn might not be such a bad idea after all.

So why can it be so hard to start an engine that has been sitting idle for six months? If you examined the spark plug under a microscope, you might figure out the problem. If you look at the tip of the spark plug with your naked eye, it will probably look fine, but if you replace that plug with a brand new clean dry sparkplug, you would probably find that your lawn mower will likely start in seconds.

The key to the mystery lies in something at the microscopic level the happens on the surface of the ceramic insulator of a spark plug over time in a machine that is stored outdoors. As the temperature and the relative humidity cycles, day after day, over time, micro-droplets condense on and re-evaporate from the surface of the ceramic insulator of your spark plug. Each time these micro-droplets form, they rearrange the tiny carbon particles that were deposited on your spark plug the last time you ran your engine. The growing of the droplets as they form pushes those particles together into conductive pathways that wind up providing an alternate path for electrical current (across the surface of the ceramic insulator instead of across the spark gap) when you try to start your lawn mower.

The carbon particles don't quite short things out, but they provide a path whose electrical resistance is low enough so that there is no spark, or the spark has so little energy that it won't ignite the charge in the cylinder. Once the engine starts, the heat of the burns within the calendar clears up this problem in a few minutes, so when you go to start the engine again the next week, it starts fine.

One easy solution for this initial-start problem is to replace the spark plug. Of course, if you want a cheaper solution that doesn't require a trip to the store, I have one for you, and it comes in the form of a hot flame. A propane torch works best, but if you don't happen to have one handy, a butane lighter or a gas stove burner will do. You see, there is a reason that the ceramic insulator surrounding the center electrode of your spark plug is made of the particular material it is made of. The surface properties of that material actually catalyze the burning off of carbon deposits when the ceramic gets hot enough. Of course, when your lawn mower has not yet started, nothing has yet gotten it "hot enough".

To solve this problem, remove the spark plug from your lawn mower, and get a hot clean flame ready (either a propane torch or a butane lighter, or gas burner on a stove). Holding on to the end of the spark plug that usually connects to the spark plug wire, stick the other end (the spark end) of the spark plug into the flame for a few seconds while rotating the spark plug a few times, heating the center electrode and the surrounding ceramic. It only takes a few seconds. After you take the spark plug out of the flame, take a look at the ceramic material surrounding the center electrode.

You should notice that the ceramic insulator surrounding the center electrode of your spark plug is now bright white, where before it might have been off-white or gray. Now your spark plug is as good as new. Put it back in your lawn mower, and enjoy how it roars quickly to life!

Lawn Mowers - How Important They Are

As far as the mowers are concerned, they are definitely very important. You will have to understand that the mowers are certainly the very important machines. They are used to cut the grasses in the garden. Almost all the people have the gardens and it is not always possible to hire the gardener. Hence we have to cut the grasses on our own. But is it possible to do with the help of the hand. This is certainly not possible. You will certainly not be able to fulfill the need in this way. Therefore the mower is required. In this article we will discuss that why it is so important.

There are many reasons which will prove that the mowers are very important for the daily use. Some of the reasons are as follows:

1. The first point is the mower use. You will be quite surprised to note that the mowers are used very frequently. The mowers are one of the most important machines found in the garden. You will certainly see that they are used very frequently. Every next week you will have to trim the grasses and it is quite sure that you will require the mower.

2. The second point is the efficiency. This machine uses no electricity. You will just have to move the gadget over the grass and you will see that the grass is cut in a very efficient manner.

3. There are definitely two types of the mowers. They are the push mowers and the riding mowers. You will certainly find out that the mowers are certainly very handy. But how are they going to be handy? This is a big question. At present I am talking about the push mowers. The push mowers save lots of energy. You will be required to just change the blade in a month or two months and you will have to do nothing else.

4. Similarly you will have to find out many other things as well. But what are those things. This is certainly very important. Generally, you will find out that you will be able to make many designs with the help of the push mowers and the grass.

You should know that when the garden is big then we require the riding mowers. But when the size of the mower is not too large then you should make sure that you use the push mowers. This will certainly save you lots and lots of money as well.

Riding Lawn Mower Blade Care

Occasionally, a riding lawn tractor or mower's blades can become unbalanced, bent, or dull, and will need either reconditioning or replacement. It is recommended that maintenance be performed on the blades at least twice a year. To care for a riding lawn mower's blades, follow the steps listed below.

NOTE: These materials are prepared for use by trained technicians who are experienced in the service and repair of equipment of the kind described in this publication, and are not intended for use by untrained or inexperienced individuals. Such individuals should seek the assistance of a service technician or dealer.

Preparation

As with many projects, think safety first. Always wear heavy leather gloves and safety glasses/goggles for protection and always disconnect both the battery ground wire from the negative battery terminal and the spark plug wire from the spark plug. If the unit is equipped with a twin cylinder engine, remove both of the spark plug wires from the spark plugs.

Removing the Blades

Most riding lawn mowers have removable blades. In order to reach the riding lawn mower's blades, remove the deck before performing maintenance. DO NOT tip the riding lawn mower on its side. This can result in serious damage to the unit. Remove the riding lawn tractor's blades by turning the blade bolt or nut counter-clockwise with a standard long-handled wrench. Do not be surprised if the blade bolt or nut is difficult to remove due to normal corrosion, dirt build-up and initial torque setting of 70 to 100 ft. lbs.

Sharpening the Blades

Sharpen the riding lawn tractor blades by using a tool, like a hand file, which is designed to be used on hardened metal. It is not imperative that the blade be as sharp as a knife. An edge at roughly a 45 degree angle will be adequate. Most of the wear will be around the blade tip. Focus on this area. If the blade is significantly worn or gouged beyond reconditioning, replace the blade. Follow the above procedures for all the blades.

Balancing your Blades

Before installing a new or sharpened blade, it is important that the blade is balanced. If a blade isn't balanced properly, it will rattle and vibrate. This will damage other components on the riding lawn mower. Blade balancing tools can be purchased at a local hardware store for a reasonable price. Clean all dirt and debris from the blade. If the blade is not thoroughly cleaned it will affect the balancing of the blade.

There are two procedures for checking the balance of a blade that we call out in this publication. The first is when using the vertical test method, the free hanging blade will rotate on its own, heavy side downward. The horizontal test method is the second; this is when one side of the blade begins to drop towards the table top. The side that drops to the table top or rotates downward is the heavier side, and needs further sharpening or material removed to balance out the blade. After sharpening, test the blade balance again, and repeat until the blade is balanced. Follow the above procedures for the remaining blades.

Installing the Blades

Once the blade has been sharpened and balanced, reinstall it with the proper orientation. If using an OEM blade, the word "Bottom" is stamped on the blade for the side that should face the ground. If the word "Bottom" is not present, be sure to install the blade with the raised tips toward the top of the deck. The blade bolt or nut should be tightened properly using 70 to 100 ft. lbs. of torque.

Cheap Fiskars 9664 Fiskars Cultivator #9664

I'm a big boy and love the extra long handle. The working angle of the instrument is large and can easily break hard ground. The end is nice and small teeth and works well around obstacles. The only problem I had minor plastic cover is at the top of the handle when I work. Slips again, but it is irritating. The weight and balance is great. I would definitely recommend. I can try a small amount of hot glue to hold the cover slip.

Cheap Yard Butler TNT-4 Yard Butler Garden Twist & Tiller #TNT-4

The soil in high traffic areas in my backyard became very compacted. This tiller helped to break it. I also used it to aerate around the lawn and get rid of the moss by twisting it out. I then sowed some grass seeds and added a fertilizer. My lawn is now green and ready for winter. I especially liked the fact that I could use my feet to push the tiller in - hands alone wouldn't handle this tough job. The tiller is heavy and solidly made and is covered with hammered gray enamel. It will serve me for the years to come.

* The Twist Tiller's unique design tills the soil and removes weeds with a twisting action * This durable tool features twisted tines, a cross bar to step on for help penetrating hard soil * Long, cushioned handle for extra leverage and comfort * 37" x14" x 6"

Yard Butler Does ALMOST everything - T. Garrett - Tri-Cities, WA
This simple tool works great for small areas. We have rocky soil and it worked fairly well. It does not till much area at once, so it is a bit repetitive but it works perfectly. It even pulls weeds for you! :) I love it and I can even get my husband to do a little gardening too! Double Bonus!

Simple Tiller - Jessica -
I liked to use this tiller when I was working in good, rich soil. It wasn't as easy to use in Georgia red clay and I found that very frustrating. I am 5'2" and it was well suited to my height, but my 6'4" husband didn't feel the same way. It suited my needs for the most part.

Twist and Tiller - Their Nana - Chicago, IL
This was a surprise for my husband. He really likes it a lot. He states that it couldn't do heavy duty tilling, but it was great for getting grass and weeds, plus their roots, out of a bed he was working on. His words were, "it is so easy to use and is a lot better then I ever expected it to be".

Cheap Fiskars 7072 Fiskars Big Grip Cultivator #7072

This is by far the best tool hand cultivator who has ever used. They are usually metal spikes with points scored at the end of this tedious and more or less ridge of dirt, rather than move.

This tool has three metal spikes of large and widespread, dirt moving very efficiently there are powerful (and do not bend or flex when you try to dig a large stone from the ground), and has not nothing too boring.

I recommend this tool for allWorking in the garden. If I could only two gardening, I chose a blade (for large earth moving), and this tool (for all others).

I used it well last week, when I put in a brick mowing edge to "lift the edges of the lawn from the street. Beneath it all hooked and pulled the piece of grass / roots of the way without tearing. I established once when I was finished.

The Fiskars big grip cultivator features a comfortable grip and an oversized tool head to provide added comfort and control. The cultivator is great for digging, planting, and turning soil. It sports pre-sharpened edges on the blades to cut through the ground easier, and the unit's offset tines are designed to cover more soil area. The metal blades are coated with a rust-resistant material, and the handle features a large hang hole for easy storage. The tool comes with a limited lifetime warranty.

Nutgrass Infestations - Minimizing it With Inexpensive Spot-Treatments

Nutgrass infestations of lawns and gardens are difficult to eradicate or control. This annoying condition is caused by the plant's extensive tubular (nutlet) root system that goes deep and wide underground. These rhizome or chain-strand roots are the main source of nutgrass renewal, more so than from the seeds of their flowers. Because nutgrass keeps a continuous reservoir of dormant roots (nutlets), it has an endless supply future growths. Thus, when one growth of shoots is treated or removed, another growth or two will sprout up nearby. To minimize nutgrass growth, its root system must be destroyed, which is not a simple one-time-treatment task.

What is nutgrass or nutsedge?

Nutgrass is a heavy perennial grass of the sedge family. Technically, two common varieties of it (purple and yellow nutgrass) are called cyperus rotundus and cyperus esculentus, respectively. Nutgrass is also called water grass because it likes moisture, tight soil, and lots of hot sunshine. It's often recognized as the fast-growing taller grass that appears shortly after mowing a lawn. Its course grass-like shoots (three-to-five or more per plant) are each slightly triangular or V-shaped with a strong vertical vein going down the middle of each. Often, the yellow variety is a lighter green than the surrounding lawn. Nutgrass is invasive. It will spread without some kind of controlling treatment. It goes dormant in the autumn of winter climates, but will reappear the following late spring.

Nutgrass Treatments.

Five common treatments for controlling nutgrass are available to the homeowner and consumer. Each one, listed below, can be done in a safe manner. But none of them are effective one-time cures. Overall, the two herbicide treatments listed below (4 and 5) appear to be effective means for controlling it at this time. However, the chemical treatments must done safely by following the product's written directions for use. Herbicide appliers could also read and know the products material-safety-data-sheets (MSDS).

1. Mechanically disturbing it. Plowing, cultivating, tilling, or digging-up the ground, and then sifting out the nutgrass roots. This treatment works. But it has to be repeated often, which eliminates it as a lawn treatment, and makes it impractical for treating crowded gardens.

2. Pulling or weeding it. This treatment will make the shoots disappear for a while. However, most of its original roots are still submerged underground. Thus, these plants will soon return, often more of them than before.

3. Smothering it. Covering the infected area with sheeting, e.g., cardboard, plastic, plywood, canvas, or mulch. This treatment will slow nutgrass down for a while, but won't stop or kill it. Nutgrass will pierce its way through cardboard, cloth, plastic, and mulch. Also, its covered roots will remain dormant for return growths once the covering is removed or wears thin. Additionally, the nutgrass will spread to the outside of the covering, underground.

4. Spraying it with a diluted herbicide solution. Spraying the infected area with a chemical formula purchased at local gardening outlets is a common choice among busy homeowners. This treatment works okay with repeated applications, done at consumer's risk. The applications generally are done when no rain or dampness is in the forecast. Also, commercial lawn-care companies can do this treatment effectively; actually, they are a good choice for a safe, more expensive cure.

Still, the main herbicide chosen for the treatment must be compatible with the infested yard in question. For example, one herbicide will work well with some grasses, but will harm others. Also, a lawn-compatible herbicide could harm the lawn if applied too often or too strongly. Additionally, another herbicide can be used on the lawn, but it cannot be used near vegetable or ornamental plants. Thus, the applier of the spray must be careful both in choosing the herbicide and applying it.

Also, the more recent urea-type herbicides, like, halosulfuron-methyl, appear to work well on the nutgrass infested lawns if applied regularly and seasonally for two or more years. It can take that long to minimize the nutgrass root system, depending on how well its start is. This kind of spraying can reduce infestations over large areas of ground.

5. Spot-treating it with a strong herbicide solution. Applying a strong herbicide solution to the individual nutgrass plants can be done with a narrow-stream spray-bottle or a thick artist's paint brush. This treatment is best suited for mild infestations of nutgrass or fairly small patches of it. (Note: if an entire lawn is heavily infested, it might be best to 1) kill the whole yard with a total vegetation killer, 2) plow or till up its ground while sieving out the nutlets, and 3) reseed it after a short waiting period. Vegetation killers do not destroy the ground itself, rather, only the vegetation growing on it. If in doubt about this step, obtain a professional opinion first.)

Yet, during the spot-treatment of nutgrass, the herbicide solution must be applied to the nutgrass leaves directly, again at the consumer's risk. The herbicide will then translocate from leaves to the stem and roots. Also, applying a daub of the solution onto the plant's leaf-crotch at the stem helps to kill the plant, but the bulk of the application must go onto the leaves for a good uptake that will reach the roots. Additionally, the applier must keep the solution from touching the surrounding grasses or plants as much as possible, especially if the chemical is a kill-all herbicide.

Glyphosate (organic-salt), a well-known main ingredient of kill-all-vegetation herbicides, can be used here. A 12-to-16-oz bottle of 41% liquid concentrate can be purchased for about $10 at local outlets. Glyphosate is fairly nontoxic to humans, but it must still be handled safely by wearing rubber gloves and other apparel. This concentrate can be applied to the nutgrass shoots by first diluting it with water anywhere from a 1:1 to 1:20 concentration in a small capped container. First-time users might want to start with a 1:20 solution to test how the process works by trial and error, while working up to a stronger concentration. Also, home owners having delicate grasses and ornamental plants will want to use a dilute glyphosate solution to start with, like, 1:20 or more, which is much closer to the diluted spray concentrations. Furthermore, the halosulfuron-methyl herbicide mentioned above in #4 can be used for spot-treating nutgrass by following the product's directions for diluting it to a powerful spray concentration (0.9-g granules/gallon) for about $15.

Certain sources suggest adding other ingredients to these kind of solutions, like, the adding of a surfactant (dish soap), hydrogen peroxide, vinegar, or a particular salt to make it stick to the leaves better, or to help it absorb through them faster. But, none of these additions are necessary. Also, such mixtures can yield slight chemical alterations over time, which will give undesirable results by not working well at all, or by the killing of adjacent grasses and plants inexplicably. Yet, when freshly-made spot-treatments are done carefully, the nutgrass will die in about one-to-two weeks without causing excessive disturbances to the surrounding vegetation.

Six-day appearances of yellow nutgrass after spot-treatment with 20% glyphosate solution.

Shoots slightly limp; no color change
Shoots more limp; slight color change to amber
Shoots touch the ground; overall color is more amber
Shoots start to wither; color is still more amber
Shoots lay on ground and begin to curl; only slight yellow-green color left
Shoots are withered straw-like stalks lying on the ground or lawn

Spot-treating nutgrass with a strong herbicide solution is time-consuming, and requires substantial patience to carry out, especially when the home/yard owner does it alone. Undoubtedly, his/her neighbors will ask, "Hey! What are you doing there?" But, this fairly inexpensive treatment works well for minimizing nutgrass infestations if the solution is handled and applied carefully at the owners discretion. Once the main infestation is under control, it's fairly easy to suppress any new growths with continued spot-applications.

At this time, the spraying or spot-treating of common nutgrasses with carefully selected herbicide solutions appears to be an effective means for minimizing its infestations of yards and gardens. These treatments can be done by the yard/garden-owners themselves at their own risks, or by hired professionals.
